Hello all

Yesterday, on winding down my window to communicate with another driver, I heard a worrying sound, and the window got stuck about half way down. After that it wouldn't go back up. After some fiddling with it, it now doesn't work at all. I can get the window to just about stay up, but at anything over about 40mph the turbulence of the car dislodges it again and it just falls down. I managed about 20mpg driving up the M1 with my window rolled down yesterday!

I don't know how much further below the frame the glass goes, so I don't know if it's the glass itself that is broken but some part of the mechanism has just completely given way. When trying to use the electric window it sounds like it's trying but not getting anywhere. Sometimes it will roll down a little, roll up a little, but it won't stay up at all.

Being unemployed and rather skint, I'm not in a position where I can pay a mechanic for his time in diagnosing it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it possible to open up the doors on these cars with a bit of DIY so i can have a look at the problem and go from there?

You dont say what year but Mk3/4/5 had a cable and that's probably snapped and gummed up the mech stalling the motor, lift the glass to the top and wedge it up with a rubber wedge/folded card to keep it up, if it's a Mk6 the window mech is a large plate that is basicly the whole inside of the door that unbolts, there are guides on you tube you may want to watch before attemping the job, either are fiddly but the earlyer are the easyer to do IME.

A common fault on the mk6 Fiesta.

There's a plastic cog on the motor which attaches with the slider mechanism and they fatigue and eventually snap in 2. From memory used motors are about £50 each and don't buy a cheaper passenger side one instead because it won't fit.

Initial research says there's two parts, the motor and the regulator, any suggestions for working out which it is without taking the door apart?
