Wow how did you manage that? Is the basic retail price for that car not just under 32 grand?
For that sort of discount I would probably do the same.....although I think the RS look much nicer than the 1 series.
I do agree the RS is a better looking car

Depending on how long you are planning the keep the car the RS is likely to depreciate less. Over 2 years the difference may be negligable but over 4 or 5 there will likely be quite a difference.

A very low mileage (14k) m135i from 2013 can be had for under £20k. A similar mileage mk2 RS from 2009 would be £23k+.

My thinking is get a car at circa 28 and in two years sell it on with say 25k miles for low 20's .
Not to bad on depreciation for a new car.
Who knows exactly what these cars will be worth down the line

Having sold up some expensive cars I've realised how good the current crop of HH's are.

The problem with top end cars is the cost to maintain them, how mileage sensitive they are and you don't really end up enjoying driving them due to values .

Wondering how good the new civic R will be when it's launched and the new golf

One of the nice things about the Focus is that it's running costs (let's ignore fuel) aren't too dissimilar from a big standard Focus! Service package is dirt cheap, and the insurance is pretty good too.

There you go, miles per smile is a winner.

So much more fun to be had in the HH segment than in the super/hyper car section where owners fret over mileage

The second hand RS market is very strong. My friend has a Mk1 with 80k miles on it. Bought for £8k and would easily sell for £10k now. And it's a 13 year old car. If my Mk3 can hold onto a third of its value after 13 years I'll be more than happy.

Re MPG on the Focus, not being careful I get around 30-33mpg and really trying just over 40mpg.

Gearing and aero seem to be the main factors as the faster you go the more it eats. I know that sounds obvious by my SLS seems to be about the same MPG from 30mph to 80mph! 30+MPG in that is a distant prospect reserved for driving down hill with the wind behind you hehe

Saw a very new reg'd RS for sale on a forecourt in Bormuff, Dorset, on Friday for £34K.

I think the games up in all but the extreemingly rare and collectible marques .

Even cars like the RS will depreciate but a slow burner which is all you can really expect .

Better off just getting out and enjoying motoring

Must have been an impressive queue of cars (and horses) stuck behind you!

Funny how these cars are either coming through quicker than people are originally told by dealers or are seemingly easier to get hold of than originally thought .

I still think they are a great purchase but there is a lot of competition in the Hot Hatch segment presently not least of all with new golf out .

I've gone from wanting an RS to driving all the variants and now deciding on a new 140M BMW with decent spec at under 28k.

As good as the RS is it can't touch the Beamer for build quality .
Beamer 0-62 in 4.6 too

That said I want an RS too
I wouldn't be too confident on build quality if I was you.
I had a 11 year old Subaru Impreza running nearly twice factory power that only had 2 things go wrong in nearly 4 years of ownership (and before that another WRX for 7 years, about 5 faults).

I owned a 2013 M3 for 8 months and in that time had blocked washer jets (common fault), gearbox issues (DCT, jerky and not great in auto mode almost to the point of being dangerous - few other owners also complain of it), and a failed manifold pressure sensor.
All done under warranty - which I must say was exceptionally professional and well handled - if only all customer service was that good! - but didn't impress me for a car which is supposed to be a premium marque and built to be reliable at that level. Make sure you get a warranty, I certainly wouldn't consider any BMW without one.
Good cars still though.

Yep, build quality isn't all about soft dashboards, lots of spund insulation, panel gaps and chunky doors. My impreza feels flimsy but the build quality is excellent. Nthing goes wrong with it, everything works all the time and it hardly has a rattle. The wind noise is loud through the windows but other than that I can't fault it.

Compared to a friends M3 which is 5 years newer, my impreza is a tin can by way of solidity and has a hard plastic interior but imo it is leagues ahead by way of actual build quality in how the boot floor wont split and it won't rattle and have bits regularly failing.

TBH I haven't seen anything on my RS that is lacklustre in terms of build quality unless a few textured plastics in places you don't touch have anything to do with build quality (which imo they don't) I will see how it fares with the miles but so far it's spot on.

As you may know, assembly for the RS is completed off the production line by a small team. They have now trained up more people for that team so there are now 140 RS being built a day whereas it was around 40 before. Makes a significant dent in waiting lists
