Mk1 Focus found

A friends father, currently in hospital decided this week to give up driving, and wanted to sell his Focus. Looking for a cheap airport hack in the next couple of months, it seemed like too good an opportunity not to investigate, so today went to look see.
It's a 1.6LX on a 54 plate, but with a mere 40,400 miles on the clock, the last few years have been to and from the garage that have serviced it and Mot'd it religiously.
A couple of "old man's car features" hastily removed, JML parking sensors, beady seat cushion, and a bin fill of vinyl "I've seen the lions of Longleat" stickers from the rear windows (side and rear).
The documentation supplied includes every Mot, every service, every repair, and a fully stamped book, every 6 months (or 400 miles) this this has seen more service than a Bangkok hooker.
Filled it up with fuel at home, and used it to come down to Luton Airport for a flight tomorrow, a journey of 180 miles and it cost me the princely sum of £20 to get it back to the brim.
Bargain basementastic.
Yesterday, we agreed "about £1,000" but as the MoT and service yesterday cost £200 we agree that £1200 was a fair price, and I for one am not disappointed.

The dynamics of the MK 1 Focus were a gamechanger- and a staggering leap forward from its ghastly Escort predecessor. Brilliant steering and handling , brilliant driving environment and control weighting - it's only the fact that so many were sold that dilutes our perception of how good they were . Best small family car since Alfa Sud - and in my book praise doesn't come any higher. Sadly each successive iteration of Focus has leached away some of the original's ...err..focus .
Had a 1.6 Zetec (2002) for 10 years. Bought it at 4yrs old. Absolutely brilliant car, handled really well, engine was reasonably willing, plus I'd get 40+ mpg on my daily commute (50 mile return trip on mainly B roads). Not much went wrong in the 10 years, clutch master slave cylinder, replacement radiator (although think it was damaged rather than mechanical failure), and heater resistor pack. All cheap and easy to fix. Original clutch lasted to 125k, still had a bit of life in it too!
Only changed it recently as I fancied something a bit newer and more powerful, but would have still kept the old one as well if I had somewhere to keep it. Just got myself a mk3 focus, hoping it is as good!
