So I've been offered (well agreed to buy) a 1.6 focus off a family friend, it was running but apparently kept blowing a fuse when low on fuel (I assumed maybe faulty fuel pump as these are a common problem apparently!)

Went to look at it, won't start, fuse not blown but will only start/run with a liberal application of easy-start into the inlet.

Would I be right in suspecting a fuel pump? is it common to blow the fuses when low prior to the fuel pump packing in all together?

I can see it's going to be a tank-out lob too, anything to be aware of when dropping the tank?

Or am I better off just breaking it for bits?

FYI: it's a 2001 (51 plate) 1.6 zetec 4 door with 74k on the clock!

Dad's Focus 1.6 was blowing the fuel pump fuse but not just when low on fuel.

Recovery guy, powered the pump directly once to get it home, replace the fuel pump and car running great. Think his mechanic did it for less than £300 in total.

Mini Review

My Alfa has direct access to the fuel pump through an access area behind rear seats without having to remove the whole tank so doubt Ford would make it more difficult.

His Focus is around 66k and for it's age inexpensive to maintain whilst still being a nice drive. Better than some new low end cars that are cost many thousands £ more. Only thing that stopped it was this fuel pump and a coil pack over 12 years. But serviced every year and less 10k.

Central locking tries to lock whilst driving, slight flicker on headlights and binnacle light when idle but not really noticeable any more.

No rust and paint work stands the test of time. (15 years outside)

Nice car to drive if not on budget tyres.

Cheers for that,

Bit of an update, got it back, charged the battery overnight and it started first time, took it for MOT and passed with just an advisory on a rear wheel bearing!

Fuse wasn't a fuel pump fuse but did blow again when trying to lock remotely next day, changed fuse and drivers door wouldn't lock so swapped lock out, fitted new wheel bearing & done a few other minor jobs on it (new radio, parcel shelf etc..)

Going to service it tomorrow then get it on fleabay/PH Classifieds! thumbup

Does £599 sound too much/too little for it?

74,500 miles, few age related marks, no prior service history...
