Wife is thinking of ditching the Zafira & getting an 2.0 TDCi S-MAX. Assuming 'PowerShift' is Ford talk for Auto, are these boxes alright?

I'd say it's more a double clutch than an auto. I have one in a 163 S-Max and it suits the engine well.

Aha ok. Is there any driver input at all if desired? (My Fabia has +/- on the stick, and paddles for example)

There's +/- if you must. There's an S auto mode too that holds gears a bit longer. The S mode can be useful if it's bendy and hilly. Selecting gears is largely pointless with the diesel engine, IMO.

We've had no gearbox concerns in the two plus years we've had it. Haven't seen anything mentioned on the Ford or S-Max forums either. I'd certainly get another one.

My mother has a 2012 Powershift Focus 1.6 and has had no issues.

I'm a Ford tech at a dealer and we replace A LOT of clutch packs in the Powershift boxes. The causes are either due to excessive judder from corrosion on the clutch discs, or oil contamination from an internal seal leak. The judder is very easily detected on road test though.

Apart from that though they're very solid on the whole, providing the fluid and filter are changed every 37.5K - a must to prevent issues in the Mondeo, Kuga or S-max (the Fiesta and Focus versions are different). They're very similar to Volkswagen's DSG, and actually manufactured by the same company. It's mainly Ford's proprietary software that differs.

I had a Mk4 Mondeo with Powershift as a hire car for nearly a month a few years ago.

Fuel economy was horrendous - low 30mpg for a 2.0TDCI Powershift really isn't acceptable.

Incorrect - the DSG boxes are manufactured by Borg Warner, whereas the Ford Powershift box is manufactured by Getrag.

I was referring to then both being an Aisin Geiki design, much the same as Porsche's PDK. All a variation of the same theme with the main differences being software related.

Slight shift of plans & getting a petrol S-Max now. It'll be used for the short daily school runs & I've heard too many report of large DPF bills cropping up.
It'll be more to tax, and to fuel, but at least those expenses can be predicted!

I don't blame you. I was sure I wanted a Powershift car and 98% of them seemed to be diesel. At least for the age and budget at the time.

I see I'm going back a few years but for a 2014 2.0ltr auto powshift dual clutch what price should I be looking at please

Can you stretch to the 2015 as that will be the new shape and a far more modern and better built car. I used to have the old shape (2010) 2.0 petrol, now have the new shape, again 2.0 petrol in the Titanium Sport X pack spec. Brilliant family car but thirsty as hell.

Early 2015 cars will be £16 - £17k from a Ford dealer.
