I'm going to look at a couple of Ford Galaxies this weekend and wondered if anyone could offer me any advice or things to look for please. The two cars are a 2.0 TDCi Titanium X with 58k on it and a 2.0 Ecoboost Titanium X with 48k on it. Both are the same price. Both have the powershift gearbox.

I'm trading in a 55 plate 535d saloon with 89k miles on it as I really need more space in the back for a dog and so on. The BMW has been our first saloon and it's been ok but not that convenient. The galaxy gives me a lot more options for carrying stuff about that would come in extremely handy. I know that neither car is going to be that quick compared to the BMW but both myself and my wife have RX8s that we use on a daily basis. The car will essentially sit on the drive until called in to use for long distance weekend trips away, runs to town or the tip where the space is needed and taking the dog out. It'll also get used for commuting short distances on a day to day basis if either RX8 is off the road. I'm aware of the problems of short runs on diesel cars and can work around that. The BMW has been fine with this kind of use and when the exhaust was apart last year the DPF looked extremely clean.

The benefits of the petrol are slightly more performance and no dpf but that's countered by having coils which will need replacing at some point. The benefits of the diesel are fuel economy on the long runs.

Anything else I need to factor in or are there weaknesses in either the petrol or the diesel I need to be aware of? For example, as I understand it the petrol has a camchain but the diesel has a belt that needs changing at 5 years or 125k miles... is that right?

Thanks,

Mark
