Well - £ talks at the end of the day and with prices going up from £0.879 in Sept06 to £1.079 in Nov07 it really does mean that even the biggest PH has to take note and start to choose cars with their head over their heart (I'll ignore the countless posts from the young ones without any mortgages to pay)
25mpg & 10k/yr means equates to roughly £1/day more now than last Sep.

If somebody is really worried about £1/day then maybe they shouldn't be looking at an ST or RS. If I was that worried I'd be buying a 1.4 diesel somethingorother.

And trust me, I have a mahooooosive mortgage! wink
Couldn't agree more fella yes

However, thanks to the easy credit of the past few years, the differing attitudes towards running significant debt in more recent times and the Brit obsession with being seen to be successful and having it all now, there are far too many people who have come right up to the line in order to get an ST or similar, especially the younger end. Knock the insurance and fuel costs up a bit (along with maybe a bit of a reduction in available overtime) and everyone cries.
Why they don't think that anything quickish+ isn't going to cost plenty, I just don't know.

I'm lucky enough not to have a whopper of a mortgage (yet) and to be honest I have fcensoredk all sympathy for those that have and are now suffering. No one put a gun to anyone's head and forced 'em to up that multiple just a touch (or buy an expensive to run car). But that's another thread altogether hehe

I'm stunned at some of he ages of ST owners over on the OC, leveraging themselves up to the hilt to buy an expensive to run depreciating asset.

£1/per day extra for 10k p.a. over last year... that means nothing to you??? Wow. So your basically saying (and Im assuming you are a 40% tax payer) that since last year part of your annual increase in salary £608 gross in fact is going purely on additional fuel costs.

Then you have the added cost of electric & gas & council tax & food & clothing & travel & the fact the Euro is much stronger against the pound now than it was last Sept06 = higher costs while on holiday & of course not ignoring the fact that your mortgage will have increased/OR your rent has increased & prices of highstreet goods have increased hugely - so in reality you & everyone else is much poorer now than they were last year so yes £1/day is very significant.

I actually lol at stating its £1/day thats what Sales men try to do with their finance deals and show it on a per week price (its lowest) and confuse everyone fact is its about £30 extra a month, thats very significant in isolation but combined with all other costs increasing it means only one thing that demand for high fuel comsuning cars is going to decrease & terefore depreciation WILL increase on lower economy cars.

So am I - at their age I had a 1.6 Astra (and that was bought for me). No way could I have afforded an ST equivalent at the time. What happens when insurance, a service and a couple of tyres all come at broadly the same time? Suppose they just bang another grand or more on the card - what does it matter when they're already £Xk in debtrolleyes

It really, really isn't. Especially not when you consider the car itself is depreciating more like £10/day.

If people are budgeting so that they can just about afford their car, house, etc. then they need to sit down and work out what they can actually afford and cut back.

I would also be interested to see how a 4 year old car won Best Hot Hatch.

Linky please smile

Found something :

http://motortorque.askaprice.com/news/auto-0710/fo...

However, I wouldn't listen to the site as they do not know their ar$e from their elbows (check out the pic of the "RS" !!). Don't know if I would respect the opinions of a group of people that would vote the Rover 75 as the best family car of the year either rofl

Made me smile none the less though....anybody want to buy an RS ? Price has just gone up rofl
