Typical, i start looking at replacing my focus TDCI having covered 65K and just outside of the warranty period it has added a new noise to usual diesel clutter..

The engine is making a strange sound when accelerating and lifting off. the sound is abit like a high pitch whine and the whine can also be heard if I rev the car stationary. The car drives normally, no problems with power or anything else. could it be a belt? turbo?? pump? I' going to book the car into the dealership to see if hey can see what the problem is.

Any thought on what could be causing the noise?

I hope someone can help!

Without hearing the car my first instinct would be an auxuliary belt(Used to be called the fan belt) or pulley fault or water pump as its fairly common.

Thanks jon,

going to get it check out on the weekend unless the whine takes a turn for the worse.

could it be that the alternator is on the way out?

cheers

Typical car,it happens all the time, sadly quite a number of customers would rather believe we just hadn't looked than accept that it was ok when tested.

Mine was sounding similar to what you're describing not so long ago. As said above, aux drive belt and tensioner. You're probably looking at a couple of hundred quid

is it worse when starting the car after its been sitting on the drive overnight? if so then I would definately go along with the belt / pulley suggestion.

it hasn't made any noises at all.. but it seems to make the noise (when it decides to) when the car has been driven and is fully warmed up.

Update:

I'm going to book the car into the local dealers to have them take a look. the noise came back on the weekend and is definitely louder.

update :

fault found to be the aux belt and tensioner. 270 notes poorer. I spoke to the tech engineer who said it wasn't a 'common' problem but did say that some 1.8 TDCI engines do seem to suffer from the problem.
