Ford Fiesta Wont Start!!!

Hi all,
Went to start the Fiesta this morning and it wouldnt go. It turns over, sounds like its going to start, but it just keeps whirring. The smell of petrol when trying to start it is unbearable, which leads me to think that its a fuel problem. Prior to this, which has been happening for a while, is the fact that it idles irregularly, especially when starting, and also when approaching a junction or lights and dipping the clutch so it is idling, the engine sometimes stalls. Its now being recovered by the garage and i have to get a courtesy car, which is going to cost a fortune!
Anyone got any ideas? By the way its the 1996 Mk3 1.1 Model
