53 plate focus dash locking up

My dash Keeps locking up the temp guage goes to zero fuel stays where it is along with the speed and revs and the engine managment light comes on.

I have spoken to ford and they have never heard of this problem and want to charge me £100 to run the car on their diagnostics machine. I have spoken to a few indipendants that tell me this is a common fault with focus's of the 02-03 age and it can only be fixed by replacing the dash. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what was the outcome.
