Wasn't there some talk of a new breed of DI petrol turbo engines called 'eco-boost' or something? If so, that'd be your answer.

I think he means for the German makes not the Ford RS? In which case i agree-over priced shat but with clean engines! I guess they have to pay for all that development somehow(people who buy them like to think they are much more expensive to actaully make and hence much better.............WRONG).
Yes, that's what I meant. Overpriced, yes. Shat? I don't think anyone could describe the Porsche flat-6 or the BMW twin turbo straight-6 as "shat" - they're damned good engines: powerful, clean and modern.

Ford need to keep up one way or another. They can't keep using that Volvo straight-5 forever - the new Mondeo and future Focus are going to need something better. Euro V will be coming in next year.

The fanboys can shout me down if they like. The reality is that without the necessary investment, Ford will struggle to produce anything of interest, let alone any new ST or RS models beyond 2010. It's possible; the Germans have proved it. A colossal manufacturer like Ford should be capable.
I never said the engines were shat-the cars are over priced and not the solid reliable cars that some owners would try and have you believe. Ford could make a clean powerful engine but would you pay £40K for Ford's RS4? No i didn't think so..............

Instead of bringing out cars like the kuga they should invest in an engine development program, maybe they already have? Dunton is a busy place.......

Must be right. Just turned it up on the interweb - new generation Ford DI turbo gas engines are out in 09. The Mazda DI engines already out are old-tech and behind BMW, VW and presumably the new Fords too.

Interweb, or intraweb?

I have to say that the figures quoted for these "eco-boost" engines don't look anything special. 340 horsepower out of a turbocharged 3.5 V6 sounds OK, but unless it can return 28+ MPG combined, and emit under 225g/Km CO2 on a reasonable medium-sized saloon car with a manual gearbox, then it might as well be a 6 litre quad-turbo V12.

Maybe the 2.0 I-4 will be better, but it needs to be up there with the VAG 2.0 TFSI (ie: under 200g/Km, 260+hp and 34 MPG).

new audi unit is rather impressive! the co2 figure is very low for the power! i don't think the RS will have a engine with less than 225g/km
