Firstly, let me apologise as I'm probably asking a question thats been asked / answered many times, but I have a slightly different twist.

I'm doing around 400 miles of M'way driving a week, but quite fancy an ST, so.......sitting at a non-license losing speed, what have people been getting mpg-wise?

I can handle the not-too-great-but-what-do-you-expect around town economy (or lack of), and the obvious enjoying-yourself consumption if I could balance that out during the M'way grind of virtually no traffic (I travel at 5am ish)....

Cheers, here's hoping you can help me part with the cash.

I reckon you could achieve low 30s if your lucky, I'm getting high 20s at moment, thats driving to work through town centre but at 5:30am but as you expect that figure will decrease with the harder application of the right foot when enjoying yourself!!!!

This was the single reason I never bought one a little while ago.

Its a nice package all round and I did like the car but the engine is not particularly powerful and very thirsty for what it delivers performance wise

to put it into perspective I actually averaged approx 5mpg more using an S4 2.7 twin turbo audi avant of 1998 vintage on an urban / motorway cycle

Ford need to get their act together on this and stop relying on a warmed over old design volvo engine.

An A3 Audi with a chipped 2.0TDi engine would be almost as quick and give much more usable fuel benefits.

26-27 gentle commuting yes but 35 on a run? We've never got more than 30-31 driving at a steady 75ish.

And it doesn't seem to mater whether SPUL or normal UL is used either.

dont want to upset anyone as i love the st's but have you considered either the seat leon fr diesel or if you dont need the size the ibiza cupra diesel. i mainly drive motorway miles and couldnt justify keeping the 350z, now have an ibiza cupra tuned modestly to around 200-205 hp but on my motorway slog sat around 75 ish i get around 51mpg. im not saying its a better car but for me it makes sense to have a car thats good on mpg when not driving hard but that can also give the fun element when required.

(please dont shoot)shoot

I've driven a Leon FR TDi 170 and to be honest, couldn't work out why they'd let it out of the factory with no suspension. The bump absorbtion was just shocking. It just felt like it was hitting the stops all the time and even small ridges felt as if I'd driven over a kerb at speed. Couldn't live with it.

Yes 35 on a steady motorway run (and thats with GGR full conversion running over 300 bhp)

then to be honest the ibiza's not worth considering as just as bad, it is the one thing i would like to change about the car, was looking at changing the suspension to progressive coilovers but apparently main problem lies with the 40 section tyres so would be a waste of money.

I've got a TDi 150 on hire at the moment and thats just as bad. On anything but a smooth road I find myself cringing when I come to bumps. A real shame as I like the look of them, but they don't come with a back-doctor so I'll have to go with something else.

HTH. If your worried about the fuel consumption then DONT get one. I currently have had mine since Spetember last year and as someone else has already stated, for the amount of fuel it uses it isn't quick enough as standard. Mine is currently sitting around 24mpg and that is not even driving spiritedly. I do like the car but knowing what I know now I wouldn't have bought one. Also the depreciation on mine is worse than I first anticipated. Thought as 8 months old I should get 15k for it with 7k on the clock but it seems that with the current fuel price situation many people are reluctant to buy them. 3 dealers wouldn't even take it in PX as they had too many of them!

Other people on here may have vastly differing experiences. I for one although slightly sad at seeing it being sold will also be slightly relieved!

In my opinion there's a load of tosh written about the fuel consumption. If people are worried about it then don't buy a 2.5 litre, 5 cylinder turbo engined car and get a diesel instead. In real world conditions our old A3 1.8T Sport and Octavia vRS weren't that much more fuel efficient. Maybe a couple of hundred quid over a year but not enough to break the bank.

For what it's worth over 8k miles (from new) mines returned an average of 27'ish mpg. Not that I'm really keeping records and is now mapped to 270 bhp (approx).

I'm normally interested in how many miles I can get to the tank. Day to day going to work and back I'll get 280 miles to the tank. On a long motorway journey recently I got 320 - 340 miles.

I just recently bought ST3 07 and appart from the sh#t dealer network iam loving the car.
I did own a VRS octavia mk1 re-mapped 220-230hp and with the trip computer saying aver 32mpg 40 on a cruze, amazingly thou the miles on the trip comp comes to be within 10-20 miles of the ST which shows 24-25mpg, both cars were mostly driving on B roads with a mixture of fast n slow corners for 6 miles to and fro work. So i don't think mpg guages are that accurate in some or most cars.
I would also say to the comments about the ST not being fast for the power plant, wrong, compare the R32 for being 3.2 motor only having 250 hp to M3 3.2 320hp. It all depends on the state of tune the market place in which the car has been placed.
In the ST's defence it is restricted in torque and hp in 1st n 2nd for a more managable smooth drive in comparison to e.g VXR, but fit an exhaust and release 30hp with no other mods,
Any cars running 2.5-3.0lt 5-6cyls all run about 25mpg even the under-powered vectra gsi 205hp gets 25 ish mpg.
Its the smoothness from these types of engines, which is why manufacturers use them, not always for big big power but for more rounded relaxed power.

Not so sure about the word "tosh" moonmonkey... if its a statement of fact(which it is, then
its hardly tosh).

Do you think your getting better mpg since having car mapped?

Who did you map it with?

Ok agreed maybe the word tosh was a tad strong. My point is and this is observing similar topics on other forums not just on PH is that there seems to be a great deal of bemoaning the ST for perceived poor fuel consumption.

I think mpg has slightly improved after re-mapping but not signifantly. I've got a dreamscience hand held flash module.

Your right, a lot of people do moan about it. I like the car, but I think as its not electric
in its immediate response when throttle down people might feel that its greedy for its lack if grunt
compared with similar models, i.e Mazda 3 MPS.

I like the look of the MPS, but dont know enough about it.

I used to commute 112 miles each way to work every day for 4 months. Yes its a pain only getting 1.5 journeys out of a tank which equated to filling up every morning as fuel was a lot cheaper at work. I used to average around about 32 which meant 70-75 on the way to work and a lot quicker home. I'm only 20 miles from work and the fuel consumption is only 24 but with a DS remap its a heck of a lot of fun !
