I am happy to report that I am now driving the Mondeo again full time, and boy have I missed it! The VXR8 wasn't much cop so I sold it...
This is surprising to hear, but I'm glad you're happy moving back to the faithful old '220. I can't help feeling though that you might have ended up buying a one-off bad car. Surely not all VXR8s are that bad?
Why what was wrong with it?

You tell me, it was your car? Your thread seemed to suggest that the suspension was dreadful.

There was nothing mechanically or cosmetically wrong with it. It was the suspension by design that let the car down, and thats generally the accepted view. It made a cracking road car, but I don't want a road car with a 420BHP pushrod engine or a gearbox that gives me DOMS!! laugh

Been in the 220 twice now, and it feels like a brand new car all over again, love it smile

What options were there on the 220?
Off the top of my head...

  • Xenons
  • Sunroof
  • Parking sensors
  • Heavy duty battery
  • Sat Nav
  • Heated rear seats or Rear Seat Audio (RSA)
Dave will know the rest... smile
I'm slowly warming to the idea of selling my Golf GT Tdi and getting an ST220. The Golf is very economical but sooooo dull! It would be a 2004 or 2005 car to get the cheaper VED. How much should I be looking to pay for one that has the above options? There doen't seem to be many with Xenons and Sat Nav. I've also noticed some have the same nasty ford CD player that my dads old shape Modeo had! I've seen some with e much nicer looking Sony unit which looks to be standard fit. Whats the deal on those?

Also I'm not entirely sure what the differences on a pre and post facelift model is! Can anybody list them?

Cosmetic stuff around the centre console, and a move from five-speed to six-speed gearbox. I'm sure there are a few other things as well...

What's your budget?

Easiest way to tell is by the dash. The later cars look a bit nicer inside.

There are three different light clusters... Amber indicators, clear indicators and clear with chrome strips.

'53 plate onwards was the first facelift, which got you a 6 speed gearbox, nicer centre console and a Sony stereo instead of the one out of a mid-90's Transit van (to answer your question) and a few other bits of kit as well. You definitely want a facelift smile

If and when the Golf sells my budget will be £5.5k at most but ideally would like to spend sub £5k. I'd expect it to have around 70k miles on the clock and would probably go for a 2004 year car. The only thing that might hold me back is the miles I do. But seeing pics of the black ST220 in the OP makes it very very tempting!

Please do. Need to keep this thread alive lol

I hadn't actually considered a black ST220 untill I saw this thread. Performance Blue was the top choice but now I'm not so sure.
So all facelift models should have the Sony CD player as standard or the optional Sat Nav. Thats good smile Were the Xenons quite an expensive option when new? They seem rare and a I wouldn't want to start messing around trying to retro fit them.

It's currently in having its 70k service, but will sort something out when it gets back.

Yep, facelift should have the Sony CD player or Sat Nav. Sat Nav looks nice, plays MP3s in the head unit (6CD in the boot) but is pretty average navigationally - not a patch on a TomTom.

Xenons were about £500 I beleive. Again, they're OK, but given modern decent "ordinary" bulbs, I'm not convinved they're worth the money.

Park Distance Control is useful though, as the bumper at the rear is quite large.

I agree re the Xenons in terms lighting up the road. But I just think when on they make the front end look a lot fresher. PDC would be handy, not that I need them of course lol smile

If you see one with Focus ST brakes on the front, it's worth considering - really helps the braking performance.

JP or Milltek exhaust lets you hear the V6 without being intrusive.

Watch for rust on the door bottoms, and rear arches. Check everything works - including the Sat Nav. Discs are not cheap, so see how old it is, if fitted.

Check the central locking and boot buttons (including the one inside) work correctly - can be expensive to fix.

Thanks Podie smile

I'll refer back to this thread when I finally view one. Need to sell the Golf first.
How much does having the Focus ST brakes affect insurance? I'm assuming it would be regarded as a modification even though its an improvement!

No big deal on mine. Join www.stdrivers.co.uk and then use Chris Knott insurance (underwritten by Highway) - they're pretty mod friendly.

Fair play to Ford, they made a great car there, very involving, surprisingly sporty and a total bargain.
