What options were there on the 220?
Off the top of my head...- Xenons
- Sunroof
- Parking sensors
- Heavy duty battery
- Sat Nav
- Heated rear seats or Rear Seat Audio (RSA)
not at all...

Cosmetic stuff around the centre console, and a move from five-speed to six-speed gearbox. I'm sure there are a few other things as well...
What's your budget?
Easiest way to tell is by the dash. The later cars look a bit nicer inside. What's your budget?
There are three different light clusters... Amber indicators, clear indicators and clear with chrome strips.

If and when the Golf sells my budget will be £5.5k at most but ideally would like to spend sub £5k. I'd expect it to have around 70k miles on the clock and would probably go for a 2004 year car. The only thing that might hold me back is the miles I do. But seeing pics of the black ST220 in the OP makes it very very tempting!
I really should take sojme newer photos... it's had a few cosmetic changes since.speedmachine said:

So all facelift models should have the Sony CD player as standard or the optional Sat Nav. Thats good Were the Xenons quite an expensive option when new? They seem rare and a I wouldn't want to start messing around trying to retro fit them.
Yep, facelift should have the Sony CD player or Sat Nav. Sat Nav looks nice, plays MP3s in the head unit (6CD in the boot) but is pretty average navigationally - not a patch on a TomTom.
Xenons were about £500 I beleive. Again, they're OK, but given modern decent "ordinary" bulbs, I'm not convinved they're worth the money.
Park Distance Control is useful though, as the bumper at the rear is quite large.

I agree re the Xenons in terms lighting up the road. But I just think when on they make the front end look a lot fresher. PDC would be handy, not that I need them of course lol
If you see one with Focus ST brakes on the front, it's worth considering - really helps the braking performance.JP or Milltek exhaust lets you hear the V6 without being intrusive.
Watch for rust on the door bottoms, and rear arches. Check everything works - including the Sat Nav. Discs are not cheap, so see how old it is, if fitted.
Check the central locking and boot buttons (including the one inside) work correctly - can be expensive to fix.

How much does having the Focus ST brakes affect insurance? I'm assuming it would be regarded as a modification even though its an improvement!
No big deal on mine. Join www.stdrivers.co.uk and then use Chris Knott insurance (underwritten by Highway) - they're pretty mod friendly.VXRuss said:
In my Mondeo above the stereo it says phone, assume this doesn't 'just work' with any phone with bluetooth.
Also, the Nav is a mission to work, think I'll get a tom tom!
IF bluetooth is fitted, it does the phone. If not, it mutes it.Also, the Nav is a mission to work, think I'll get a tom tom!
Yes... the Sat Nav is a pain. What version of the discs have you got?

How reliable is the 3.0 lump with a few years/miles under its belt?
Looking last week I noticed a few 3.0 Titanium and Ghia models that were even cheaper than the already cheap ST220.
The most reliable engine Ford (Porsche?) have ever produced? Plently of them in the states with 300k+ on them. Mine is on 102k and still goes round the Nurburgring ok, its whisper quiet and normal driving returns 31-34mpg average per tank.Looking last week I noticed a few 3.0 Titanium and Ghia models that were even cheaper than the already cheap ST220.

Very, very different engines. It's a Clarkson-ism that people have taken as gospel.
Much like the Jag Duratec engine is very different to the Ford one.
Its not 'that' differant ive had both in bits although the Jag does have the vvc & differant manifolds amoung other odds & sods Much like the Jag Duratec engine is very different to the Ford one.
Also seen 3000cc Jags throw rods but never a Ford one.

... and DAMB rather than finger followers, forged crank, different cylinder head design with different port angles, pent roof chamber angles, different pistons, a resonance charge inlet manifold, continuously variable inlet VCT... they are very different engines.
i wonder which bit causes the rod failure ???Marquis Rex will know
Check everything works. Make sure the boot opens from the boot button and the interior button - if fitted.
Check for damp carpets and boot.
Once warm, give it some beans - it should have another kick about 4000-4500rpm
Service intervals are annual or every 12500 miles. Make sure the oil has been changed. Big service at 72k I seem to recall - new plugs and leads recommended.
