Major problem! The roof disappeared!
Discussion
Has anyone heard of this before? TVR claim it is impossible but believe me it happened! And no, before anyone asks, the roof was on correctly and the struts were tight. It was very windy and I was in the nineties on the A1M. Suddenly a popping sound and the roof simply flew away... never to be seen again. It must have ended up in a field or something. The Police have no record of any incidents around that time so at least it didn't kill anybody. But it could have, imagine that coming at you...
Yes, I've heard of this before - on a Griff I think and on this forum too.
Actually driving around here in the wind the correct side of 70 my roof makes sounds that it doesn't when the wind is calmer, I usually have to find myself the - correct side of 70 to stop it happening.
Oh the paranioa - the paranioa, they'll get me one day I'm sure!

Same thing happened to me on the dual carriageway, except I was doing near on 150mph at the time, scared the s**t out of me, sounded like a shot gun going off, followed by instant daylight and wind, thought my life was flashing before my eyes, when I looked in the rear view mirror I caould see the roof still in the sky coming to the groun on the opposite side of the road, luckily no one was hurt and I was able to retreive and repair the panel, not an experience I wish to repeat, I put it down to wrongly fitted panel, but who knows!
A friend of mine had this happen to his Chimaera, it was put down to a badly replaced windscreen. The general glass fitters had not properly bonded the rubber, and it moved, allowing the roof to "move". ?Unfortunately, it was enough to put him off TVRs, although he is the type to get bored of any car pretty quickly.

This happened to me on my wedge, about 2 weeks into ownership whilst showing the car off to my new girlfriend - most embarassing!
The cause was the over centre bars being slightly bent and so not applying enough force to hold everything in place at speed. The fix was to elongate the bar mounting holes slightly and so move the bar up a bit to put more compression into the roof. I also fitted an extra catch on the header rail as it took some time to source a new roof.

Mmmm ! Sounds as though this is primarily a problem at high speeds where the lift from the airflow is very high.
Has anyone come up with a simple mod as a backup? . I guess that the wind pressure lifts the rear of the panel , which allows the front studs to disengage and off she goes.
It sounds as though some rear studs that engage into the rear hoop might be a good idea - anyone tried something like this ?.
I will see what looks reasonable .
