I've noticed quite a few jibes between Chim and Griff owners, some of them not so light hearted in some parts of the forum. Are we not all TVR owners who should admire each others cars? At the end of the day, they're mechanically the same; the Chim is merely a slightly softened GT version of the Griff, with the Griff being a slightly more hardcore sports car (that's my view anyway). So, how, and why, did this rivalry begin?

Just because they are the same car more or less and in most part it is light hearted banter, And we all know the griff is like a wheel barrow and the chim was a proto type for it's better looking big brother. hehe

King Fisher, do you have a blue helmet? smile

I agree though. I don't think the Chim is nearly as pretty as a Griff, but they are great cars and I've really enjoyed driving a Chim 500 (and I should as it is practically the same as a Griff 500).

It's because the griffs look like a badly designed wheel barrow

I wouldn't say either is better looking, they're both fabulous designs in their own right. The Chimaera is the car I chose purely as I needed the boot space, but that wouldn't make me say my car is 'better' than a Griffith? Nor would I say a Griff looks like a wheelbarrow! (I like those exhausts, the way they stick up into the air is slightly offensive, a bit like the sound that emanates from them! biggrin)

The gentle banter is because Chimaera owners are a bunch of whiny girls who are so much fun to wind up.

Why would you have a Griff or a Chim when you can
get a S and a lot of petrol for the same money

That sums it up very well. The Griff is a 'pretty' car, like a Mazda MX-5 or Daihatsu Copen biggrin

I like them both, both body shapes have their pro's & con's, if i was being honest though the Griff is the bad boy on the block. The banter is nothing more than that, we are all on the same team after all. cool

Chim looks like a proper British sportscar, Griff looks like Aunt Fanny out of the film "Robots"...

Griff drivers are always jealous that their nervous car not as fast. (and embarrassed that their roof is always on due to difficulty stowing)

I like the rivalry it's just two passionate camps of TVR owners of two very similar cars, the styling being the only obvious separation when choosing (if you ignore history, engine specs etc) and is obviously hugely subjective.

I always wanted the Griff because it was the TVR that made me fall in love with the brand, and being the iconic one of my time meant a bit more to me. However the price of the Chim is very hard to ignore, and recently (thanks to Ropps) had my first drive of a Chim 400 and it was just so different. Lovely is a better word. Pliant, easy, a proper every day car. The Griffith is a handful in comparison, never lets you feel completely at ease. I'd actually happily have both for different reasons.

Shame the Chim looks like an MG going through a mid-life crisis biggrin

Look lads - I know that the realisation you've bought the wrong car smarts like an accidental blast of Ralgex on your helmet but please just go sit in a corner and comb your chest wigs whilst us real men enjoy a classic driving experience...

hehe
