Spent the weekend polishing and fettling (ok did some driving too) my 400se.
Noticed it didn't frrl right though. Nothing I could put my finger on, just a bit flat. Checked everything I could but found no real fault. Theonly other thing that I had noticed was that the Brakes had developed a "pulse" as if the discs were warped.
Finally I pulled the vacuum hose from the manifold to the brake servo off and looked inside. The hose was OK but where it connected to the engine the rubber had gone very hard - like shiney tar - and it was clear that this would not make a nice airtight seal. Cut the last half inch off an reconnected: Voila! Performance restored and no more pulsing brakes! Thought the info might be of use to some of you other Rover V8 engined cars out there.
Looks good for Chatsworth now too.
Cheers
