Small Block Chevy
Discussion
You can get Alley Small blocks - just more money - they are the best V8 on the planet - and can goto 7.1ish litres and 560bhp in this spec - one like this just built by the guy who does my TR4 race engine for an Ultima Can-am - 560on the dyno! But 400+bhp and Sh*t loads of Torque would do.
You mean to tell me that 0-60 in 4.5 and 0-100 in 11 for a Griffith 500 is slow? Need to go faster? If so save the money and go to Mark Adams and get a tune / re-chip. Then if that aint any better go see someone like RPI (or is that RIP) or ACT and they will liberate the geegees from the engine.
Even can go to 5.2 litres with in excess of 400BHP before needing an engine transplant... What would the performance be then - maybe 0-60 in 4 and 100 in 9...... not bad...
Cheers,
Paul

What sort of price for a 400bhp one?
Craig
Prob about 6k for a 400bhp motor + 2 - 3 for all alloy one. A chip and minor rolling road work will noth inherently make it go much quicker - it is the internals that need to be of a higher spec. Yes your could easily spend 3 - 4 on a major upgrade but not to 400+ (the old 4.5 full race Tuscans only ever had a true world 370+) and they have a better crank. I can't see me doing it - but if I won the lottery I think I would do it, just to be different - and for the Noise...

Has anyone evey thought about putting a Small Block Chevy (Alley to keep the weight down)Race motor in a
Griff or Chimera - to get them to really go like they should 450 real bhp conpared to 275 real world bhp on a 500? Probably to long but it would sort it out....
That's the easy bit. Making sure the rest of the car can take it is a major challenge.
The 520 has had to come off the road as it's 400 ish bhp has just wrecked the rear transmission and suspension because of the torque. NOthing that a rebuild and some extra modifications and bit/lot of money won't fix but adding power is the easy thing.
Been there, sold the tee shirt...

I had the first Factory supercharged Mantis, which Marcos retrofitted with an intercooler and a revised Chip after about a year, as a FOC reliability/power upgrade. (They also supplied replacement rear tyres FOC!). Amazingly the CR was never lowered (about 9.75 I think)and running without cats it showed 480bhp on the rolling road, in a car which weighed about the same as a Peugeout 206! Marcos took the car to be inspected for Type Approval when new, then brought it back to the factory to remove the cats before delivery!
The Mustang Cobra engine with its 4 cams, 32 valves, intercooler and Votex supercharger was an amazing sight.
I had previously had a 5l Griff and 4.2 and 4.5 Cerberas; it all came about when I went to Chris Marsh and said, 'I want something as fast/faster than my 4.5 Cerbie, but with a soft top'.
Was it faster than Cerbera, with about 100bhp more? I think so; I never managed a Track Day without an 'off', so it was either my driving or a surfeit of power - I assume the latter naturally.
