Mine Griff 500 has a 300mm cooler mounted vertically in the centre of the radiator using simple bent 255mm flat steel and bolts.
With an oil cooler fitted you need to be careful about getting the oil temperature up to an adeqaute level in the winter though. Mine is covered up with a sheet of cardbord at present because it overcools when the air temperature is too low (anything below 10 degrees air temperature!) and cold oil will not do the engine any favours. You may want to think about why you want the cooler to do and its purpose before fitting one.

I have one to fit ,have not got a clue how to fit it ..I also want to fit a oil temp guage somewhere .I`m a bit scared i may do something wrong and damage the engine ..

Stop faffing and fit it, you won't air lock it if you back fill the cooler and pipes and the filter( you need the short filter btw, same as ford Essex v6), dry fit every thing first when your happy fill it up. Keep an eye on the oil pressure light when you first start it up it should go out after a couple of seconds, then go for a drive and enjoyI have a sandwich plate with a stat type thing screwed in ,two ready made braided hoses ,a bracket and a Mocal oil cooler ..

Thanks for you concern, I back filled the pipes and cooler when fitted so shouldn't be any air trapped in there, also I'd rather the oil cooler traps the air than air getting trapped in the pipe work not that I see that happening as air trapped in oil is normally suspended within the oil and will be pushed round

Another reason is that I've read that the engine can lose prime, from the oil gravity feeding back to the pan. Cheers

I've been through a few radiators mostly due to fin damage from objects getting past the mesh at speed - isn't that oil cooler a little exposed there? Edited by MischaV8 on Wednesday 20th March 08:53

This is not on a chim or griff but might turn a light on for someone,I have a duct to the small fan which is primerary for the gear box and the small rad is the diff cooler using the same air the small mocal pump on the right side pumps oil through the diff,i run omex and have fan set to be controlled by ECU as regards temp.On my trackday Griffith i run a Lamanova water oil cooler which heats the oil up to engine temp then keeps it at engine temp .great oil cooler as you have the oil and water at the same temprature.No blocking off oil rads for me with cardboard in the winter as the Lamanova does not have a rad as such and cannot get damaged,it is a ali tube about 400mm x 65mm the slightly larger model has a diff cooler in it as well.

after 6 years and 20000km+ no problems with rad and cooler.
as you know the rad is mounted almost flat/horizontal with the Griffith not with chimaera.

I must have more stones/grit around my way than you. I was thinking a custom mesh cage to fit around the oil cooler and clip onto the main mesh might be a sensible approach.after 6 years and 20000km+ no problems with rad and cooler.

This makes much sense to me. Shirly it must be possible to fit a temporary digital readout oil temp gauge to determine exactly what temps the oil is getting to? I was considering fitting a cooler to my MG (RV8 powered) but was strongly adivised against it as it would do more harm than good... So, er, anyone know what the oil temperature under varying conditions is supposed to be?
