harpenden car show

I was there but didn't take theGriff. Apparantly they try to restrict it it to cars over 15 years old- not very successfully looking at what was there. Still I only live about 10 minutes walk away. Shame about the monsoon right at the beginning, turned the place into a bit of a quagmire. Still, a good evening helped by a couple of bevvies in the Silver Cup opposite.

I had a quick look around (found a pair of wellies). A fair selection of classics and TVRs. Not too sure about the American cars, but I'll excuse the GT40! The new 996 turbo was rather tasty, the 5000 S Countach wasn't.
There were a few Maxxed Novas and Saxos that turned up at one point...

I drove through in my Griff and was waved away by the police. It seems to me that Classics has become too big for itself and the organisation (and town space) isn't up to coping with the influx of cars.
Shame really. driving through Harpenden any day of the week is hassle enough. Last night it was a nightmare.

The Harpenden car show (or Classics On The Common as it's called) happens each July, on the 1st or 2nd Wednesday evening. I believe it's "organised" by the Rover P5 club but every year it's very difficult to find exact details. This year I spotted the date being promo'd on the Standard Car club website.
This year it was amazingly well attended considering the deluge of rain at about 6 o'clock. We didn't take the Tuscan - it's been extra-special polished for Supercar Sunday so we didn't want to risk the mud. Haven't seen the steam powered car there for a couple of years, which is a huge shame.
It's a lovely event but it's being overtaken by its own success. The rozzers are amazingly good natured about the whole thing, considering the antics of some people when leaving the site!

It's a joint effort between them and the Carpenters Arms classic car club, or so I understand. Mind you, I'm too young to be into classics, and the Carpenters Arms is the wrong end of town for me!
Their website's worth a look though.
