Let's be honest, none of us want a breakdown mechanic attempting to fix our cars, we want a specialist to do it. All I want / expect is that they turn up reasonably quickly and then take my car to where I want it to be. That said, I use Start Rescue currently, £23 per year breakdown and recovery package, but they do homestart and full European packs as well. I've previously used IC breakdown on the same basis when I had Lotus and they cheerfully transported my car from Liverpool to Milton Keynes for a cyclinder head failure for about the same premium, from Corley services to Liverpool for a pinhole leak in the radiator and from Preston to Liverpool for a snapped driveshaft. To be honest I felt guilty leaving them, given my cost / payment ratio!

Europe cover from these guys is 10 years old or less.

Who is the best value for a 17 year old car for a short trip in Europe?

Is it? Bugger. They cheerfully insure my TVR that is 10 years old this year, but I don't have European cover on it. Hopefully they will continue to do so for next year too, for a pick up your car and drop it off where you want breakdown service, you can't knock the price.

Manning can't offer breakdown cover for 17 and over which is a shame.

Well. Interestingly a letter arrived yesterday with my Mrs membership card in from ADAC !! Nothing for me so I checked my credit card again and lo and behold £94 has been taken. I only wanted the single membership plus so should have been 84 Euros. Its all got rather bizarre ! I wonder if my card is on the way in the post ???
Has your card come through yet? I'm going to the 'ring in May and then to France in September in our Vito so ADAC membership would be ideal as it would cover myself rather than the vehicle.

If you insure though MSM you'll get full European breakdown cover with repatriation to your UK TVR specialist of choice for £47.70 a year.

http://www.msminsurance.co.uk/

Importantly.....

THERE ARE NO AGE RESTRICTIONS WITH THIS BREAKDOWN COVER

This is extremely rare as most will completely refuse to offer European breakdown cover on vehicles over 16 years old.

As someone who travels extensively on the continent in a 1996 TVR Chimaera I've looked into the whole Euro breakdown thing very carefully.

Every year I take another look at insurance & Euro breakdown cover, I've tried separating the two but every year I find the only practical & cost effective solution is to package both products through MSM.

Just checked their website and it appears that you can now buy the breakdown cover even if you don't insure with MSM.

£57.70 without Homestart or £70.95 with it.

Hi,

Looks good.

Who do they use for recovery in the UK and who do they use abroad?

As I started this thread, thought I,d best add something!

ADAC have just sent me their members magazine.....So seems that they are still covering me? Agree, it will be interesting to see what happens at renewal next year?

Oh yes .... I telephoned them and asked for clarification. The nice lady who was fluent English said that they had been given different instructions and it had caused confusion to UK potential customers as someone from ADAC was not aware that the UK is in Europe and therefore persons that live there are fully entitled to join !! Whether this is a final 2 fingers up at the AA that tried to monopolize the uk customer base who knows.

My card arrived and am fully covered but lets hope it does not come needing them.

Greenflag are a good company, I have called them out around 4 times within the last five years (Honda and Vauxhall to blame) and they have arrived within 20-25 minutes every time.

My experiences with AA and RAC have been totally different, waiting for up to four hours to be collected!

I don't know what their European cover is like cost wise, but their UK service has been great.

Just phoned this morning and got passed to 3 different agents.

First said "ok to join if resident in UK"
Last one said "Not possible, go to the AA!"

Very confusedconfused
This is what I got back from them too, even when using the email address quoted earlier in this thread.
Yes, me too - had a reply by email after sending one to address at start of thread ( petra..... )
They were saying better to use a breakdown service in UK

I used to be a member but let it lapse last September

Left my Tuscan in a German airport for 4 weeks in May.
ADAC duly came and gave me a jump start.
He even took a photo of the funny place English cars keep their batteries.

Both times I’ve rang ADAC I’ve had to deal with a very grumpy huffy woman who didn’t seem very interested in helping me. Then I receive a phone call from a UK call centre somewhere, then another call from a UK breakdown company. The trail goes on for ages and each company has very little information from the last. Once I had to cancel my recovery and I had no idea who to phone. Eventually got through to the AA who were coming out to me, but they supposedly had no record of my breakdown at all! So I assume there was no one coming out to me either.

When I renew I think I will go with MSM.

Holy thread resurrection Batman.

Just for info, after having a mooch about trying to find out if ADAC are accepting UK members and getting nowhere much fast I happened across another site that had a little more up to date info and today I've signed up to a new ADAC Plus membership.

The number I phoned was..

0049 221 47 27 47

Paid by credit card and membership number given out to me at that point.

Check they have taken payment. They didn't with me and then I was left stranded.
