My '98 Chimaera 450 had a factory fit air-con system.

Some 2/3 years after purchase, I was tinkering, as you do, and noticed that when I pressed the aircon button the clutch on the compressor would not engage. Subsequent Q's on the forums led me to believe that the system was low on refrigerant.

A mates dad has access to all the necessary gear and did a full check (including holding a vacuum on the system for the appropriate 45 mins). then a re-gas, re-oil and set-up. The difference was dramatic!!ICY, I mean really cold air was now coming out of the vents.

So, yes, if the a/c system is leak proof and is gassed up with the exact volume of refrigerant, it is very effective.

Likewise my '99 450 has a factory fit system. A few years ago the condensor and some other random bit developed a hairline crack and it took a while to diagnose and fix. Now it's possible to get the cabin too cold, such that driving down the road I'm manually turning the aircon on and off.

A useful modification would be to fit a dedicated aircon switch, and then have the option of warm to freezing cold aircon air. Are there any reasons why this would be bad?
