Anyone out there know of the best / nearest place to Southampton to get car noise level tested for track day?
Maybe some knows of a company who sell / hire a test meter?

I think either bookatrack or easytrack offer a noise meter hire service by post... check their websites.

Tandy/Radio Shack sell them for around £35 to £40. You can often get a noise chcek done at Goodwood as well.

If possible have the noise test done at the curcuit you intend to attend, as in my experience they all vary slightly, more important if you have a modified exhaust or know that you are close to the limit.
The Tandy meters are good value but should only be used as a rough guide.

Exhaust Noise Level tests are part of the DOT Single Vehicle Approval.

Therefore if you look up your nearest Department of Transport Test Centre in the yellow pages (most cities will have one) you may be able to get it done there.

I don't know how much they may charge ?

There is a noise FAQ on my website and its covered in the bibles. Lots of different ways at different revs and so on.

Basically if you have anything other than a standard exhaust you will either need to forget about track days or use some form of insert bolt on silencer.

With extreme cases, even that won't help you. I've got to the point where I see little point in sports exhausts and so on as they just get in the way of me enjoying the car on a track.
