My tuscan year 2000, that I have rebuilt from the ground up, has started making a knocking sound as the car moves over even the smoothest roads. I've replaced all of the bushes for new ones, have fitted a new a set of protech shocks and have had the suspension geo done.

I can replicate the knocking by opening the door and using the door as a lever to rock the car up and down a fraction. I can't replicate it by standing on the sill and bouncing up and down.

So far I have checked the suspension bolts are tight, the shock's eyelets to bolt tolerance, the exhaust's mounting, loose items in the space behind the side speakers/ beneath the quarter panel small glass section and going back to the boot, without success.

My next things to check is that all body to chassis mounting bolts are in place and tight, the seat bolts are tight, that there is no crack in the chassis around that area, the targa locking mechanism and the fuel tank sender/level sensor arm, (The latter is what is sounds like to me, but the biopsies is not affected by steering or fuel level?)

How is the roll bar/hoop bonded back to the bodyshell? Could that have come loose and be knocking somehow?

All help and suggestions welcomed.

When does it happen, speed etc. Does it go after a while? Is it low level knocking at low speed in particular, mainly when driving off? Not too loud just a tapping? What Protechs do you have?

Martin,

Targa rear roll hoop goes down to o'riggers at B post level. If you lift the trim behind doors, I believe you can trace the tubing down to this level...IIRC the door-lock mechanism is bracketed to it.

Have you spanner-checked the drive shaft(s) at diff' and upright end(s)? Prop UJ into diff'?

Random thoughts atm.

Na, door hinges are tight wink

The roll bar does in deed come down to the outriggers and those 2 bolts are tight. The roll bar is braced back to I think the wheel arch, but not to anything structural. This is becoming a strong contender the more i think about it.

The knocking is most noticable at slow speed with the roof on, but that is only because it muffles the noise from the exhausts! But as I said in the post, I can replicate it by wiggling the doors up and down. Urrrmmmm.

Think I'll get it on a ramp with a fellow PHer and see if we can make sense of it.

Ideas still welcomed as it will be a few days I imagine.
thanks

I'll ask the questions again ;p Does it go after a while? Is it low level knocking at low speed in particular, mainly when driving off? Not too loud just a tapping? What Protechs do you have?

Nope, always there, it's a knocking/tapping sound that is most noticeable a low speed but is still distinguishable at higher speeds, brand new protechs for the tuscan. Can't tell you exactly which body they are. Sorry. How might that affect the noise?
Cheers,

My first guess would be the ARB drop link. If these are worn they make a lot of noise. Because you can replicte the noise by rocking the car up and down but can't replicate by just pushing the body down makes sense to me.
Second guess would be the targa bolts are not fully engaged. Just remove the roof and you'll see...

With my Cerbera, I had an ARB bracket that was cracked and that caused an annoying squeak/knock.
