If you think it costs a lot to run a Cerb forget an RS6 hehe

I kept mine for four months.

14k of warranty work eek
I've heard this also. They are the lambo of the estate world. More time in the garage than on the road!!!!! ;-)
RS6 (V10) once it's technical and handling capabilities are fully understood, and brakes upgraded it is difficult to beat.

As above it would be easy to do £4k in a single Trackday in brakes & tyres, but once you learn how to switch off all the safety stuff (well nearly all) and then explore its true limits without it braking and de-throttling for you, It then becomes less costly, but still twice to three times the cost of a Cerb or sag.

Hardly ever needs to go to the garage, but look after and understand them and use a good independent.
Had first one for 90k miles

The Old 2.7 Twin Turbo S4 Audi is one of the nicest fast estates I have ever owned..Later V8 versions are better handlers and both can be had for peanuts these days…The original S2 and RS2 is a case of Buy now and double your money over the next 5 years??
I don't think that their is a better estate to be had..

Another vote for Audi...my tow truck is an S6 Avant, 4.2 v8. Great all round car and for less expensive than the RS6 to run....355bhp is plenty for a tow truck

I had a B5 RS4 Audi for a while (probably should have kept it) Also had a B6 S4 which was worse in nearly every way to the RS4 including fuel economy. Also the RS4s are holding their value if looked after, can't see them heading downwards.

I regret getting rid of the chipped RS4. Very quick and cheaper to maintain than RS6s. I must be getting old though because the 1998 270K 523 BMW I drove yesterday was much more comfortable and nicer to drive, in fact feels better put together, less crashy on our cr4ppy roads and quieter than my 2005 520D daily driver and no stupid I-drive. Also got 34mpg on motorway.

So older 5 series petrol with any engine from 523 (2.5) upwards which can be had for peanuts and will go forever? Spend whatever is left on the TVR, or another TVR...

Nearly as good as an RS and still plenty left for repairs..Rally good car.Interior on this one a bit pants…Matching Black / Blue alcantara is the one to find…This was a very competent car. Not as fast as an RS but smaller turbos equalled more drivable and easy going..

Obviously you can get moneypit bangers for that money but not an RS4 or RS6 moneypit.

Why a banger? The RS4 and S4 are very similar..Plenty S4s out there running the same power outputs. fully galvanised body and good mechanicals…older cars don't make them bangers…all cars will need a bit of TLC as they age but there comes a point when a banger becomes considered a classic..
The S2 / RS2 would be a shrude buy even if it is a tad above the purchasers budget…

Personally I prefer the S4 over the RS. RS in my view when driven back to back was more potent but not as nice to drive as an everyday. The later V8 S4's were another generation on in handling..

a 2.0 TFSi quattro avant similarly with 220hp is a lovely thing and real world fast whilst keeping a good balance of economy…Audi's are getting more expensive because of fleet buyers and Leasing..a good indy means they aren't necessarily money pits though. Depends how much you can do yourself ?

6k will get you a very nice S4 Avant. Not sure what fast estate can beat that in the 6k budget range??

If we're spending money like water on fuel in our TVRs, why not a BMW X5 3.0D Sport.

Not too shabby on performance, pulls family and luggage, excellent on fuel, 4 x 4 for winter and looks good as well.

It must tick most boxes.

Audi A6 Le Mans ticks my box
2.7 or 3.0 paddle shift
Holds the value like no other
Higher spec than the S line

I'm going for one this year or early next
