I worked for Reynard for 3 years - running their drawing office CAD - they've now gone to the wall this year . . . there must be 500+ motor racing people "lost" this year. Worse hit than IT!

CFD (Computational FLuid Dynamics) is where most the big IT money has gone in recent years in motorsport, and the high cost of engineering CAD licences.

I almost joined Arr*ws last year - but their financial position then put me off!

Motorsport is great - especially when you are doing well!

I've done work for a couple of F1 teams, can't tell you who (confidentiality agreements) but I work in the Computer Vision Industry.

I've often wondered if its a whole lot less glamorous than it looks. Long hours, high pressure, strict deadlines and people coming down on you like a ton of bricks if you mess up.

Having said that, I wouldn't object to finding out 1st hand for a year or so.

I got down to the last six for joining Cosworth Racing as a graduate last year but by the time I had the factory tour I was so disilluisioned I didn't want the job. I was visualising track support, glamour, etc. as well as the normal engineering stuff but I spoke to some of the recent joiners there and they hadn't left the factory in two years! Not only that but the pay was sh!te as well, £25k/annum less than what I got when I joined my current employer as a graduate!

Would love to be a chief designer or something though - just wish I was good enough!

Terminator, I may be old but I will never be as old as you!!

Funny enough, one of my major clients used to have offices in Vanwall Business Park in Maidenhead on part of the old factory site, so you're not too far off.

As for Cooper, ah yes, we used a computer vision system to analyse the chalk marks on the floor so that a 3D chassis could be modelled!!!!

PS more up your street, was involved in some bread inspection stuff in North London a couple of years ago.

Weren't Reynard the ones building the chassis for Premier1 GP what happens to that now?
Seemed like it may be the only viable alternative to F1

JonRB and roadsweeper; Yes it can be glamorous, and extremely well paid if you're at the right point (top race engineer? £200K easy, Chief Deisgner? Name a seven figure sum), right team, etc BUT F1 (and other lesser formulae) are all incredibly political up top, so it's sometimes a case of who you know . . .

As a junior engineer, most are paid sweet FA (dole money) but they do it coz they are PetrolHeads and happily spend all their time getting into it - weeekends spent building cars/engines/gearboxes.

Race weekends ARE great, but if you're not happy being up at 5 in the morning and travelling shit loads , , then be . . .an IT consultant (and around we go again!)

Me? I loved the smell of methanol in the morning!!

Yes, they did! I think that's a tad mothballed at the mo, though someone will probably pick it up, like all the other formaulae Reynard were involved in!

Spare parts anyone?!
