Anyone got one? Any good?

I'm talking about those little power bank things with li-ion batteries that claim to be able to jump your car, as well as charging your devices. Like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/FLOUREON%C2%AE-Car-Jump-St...

or this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-portable-function...

(The description is messed up, but you get the idea...)

I've got the second one. It was excellent at starting my S2000 until I could be bothered to get a new battery for it but it struggled with my Defender. It started it but but the wires used to get worryingly hot. In mitigation the LR hadn't been started for months, the battery was completely shot and it needed a fully dose of pre-heaters and quite a lot of cranking before it fired. The maximum cranking time for these devices is, if IRC 5 seconds and I worked it for longer than that.....

A mate of mine is a motor trader, and he swears by them as some of his cars don't get driven too often.

But as he uses his quite a lot it is a pretty heavy-duty model. I think they're like most things, you tend to get what you pay for!

The bonus with these is you can take them with you, so if you go somewhere you can still get home even if the battery hasn't charged enough to start the car.

I was given a Bakth 12 Volt 8800mAh Mini Jump Starter for Christmas. It easily started my Riley after the car had been left in the garage for four months. Cost around £50 from Amazon I think.

I think it very much depends upon the model.

A mate in the trade has one that's the size of a phone - it will start a Bentley IIRC it was circa £150

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jumping-Jack-Supermax-Port...

Jump started a mates diesel VW people carrier with a flat battery no probs at all.

It'll sit on the palm of your hand and comes in a neat little case with all the accessories and will fit in your glovebox

I have the one in the second link.

It's started my 3.2 Jag that had a flat battery & it's brilliant running the bilge pumps on the boat every fortnight.

Have also used it just to turn boat engine over (old old 1.8 BMC diesel) & I'm pretty sure it would have started it too.

I had an intermittent battery drain (now fixed was found to be water ingress into relays causing fans to run/drain battery). So looked at getting something from Halfords - forget it they were overpriced and absolutely massive/heavy. + max of a 2.2 litre jump start capability apparently ....

I've got an Audi S4 B7 (4.2 litre V8). So a big old lump to start - So did a bit of googling and ended up buying this AFTERPARTZ AllStart Car Jump Starter. Go as big on the amperage as you can.

Worked brilliantly - Comes in a snazzy nylon wallet with all the connectors/wall charger/cigarette charger you'll ever need. Was also approximately half the price of what Halfords had on offer.

Can you get an Anderson connector for these? My T350 seems to go flat if it's not driven for a few days (annoying as it's stored about 50 miles from me!) and it's a massive pain to push the car up a slope to get it somewhere I can jump it from my other car.

I imagine it would be cheap to get an auto electrician to cut the wires and crimp in a plug/socket combo so you can use the croc clips or the Anderson.

Not a bad shout, but I'd be interested to see if there's room to do so on my car. I've had the TVR go flat on me while it's been on my driveway, it's a bit of a faff but a fairly straightforward job to get to the battery - jack it up, axle stands on, wheel off, cover panel off, hello battery. The Anderson connector is a good way of avoiding all of that just to jump start it, but as it turns out I can't connect a trickle charger to my Anderson-croc clip leads.

I'll do some research.

That sounds like a yes the, thanks all!

This thread was inspired by my Eunos which didn't want to go yesterday after not being used for several weeks. Luckily I'd parked it facing into the shed so I could bring my other car up to jump it, but a power pack would have been less faff...

I've had several of the "old-school" jump boxes, and they really do need to be kept charged to have any kind of sensible life. Remember, they're basically just a motorbike battery in a box with a low-tech charger and half a pair of jump leads, perhaps a torch and a compressor. With that in mind, a spare charged car battery, and half a pair of jump leads with some quick-release clamps on them...

The LiIon ones should be less fussy about that, but I'm sceptical about their ability to actually deliver enough oomph, fast enough, to get a car with a flat battery up'n'kicking. I'm happy to be convinced, though.

I'll take a lithium ion one over one of those any day of the week. Lithium jump packs make far more sense than a lead iron one.

It is a really great piece of kit. I used to always worry about getting my Crossflow fired up in the cold
