I've taken out the pre cats and fitted a Clive F Y piece. I would like to get more noise but am getting different advice - some say to sleeve it, but then others say if I do that I can never revert it - so I should buy a new exhaust e.g. ACT.

Any advice on what to do useful! I am aware plenty of people think it sounds better like it is now, but I use it rarely and mainly for short trips, so some more noise would be fun!

The ACT pipe will give you the noise you want,
Sleeving involves opening up the silencer box, removing perforated pipes and replacing for sold ones so straight through,
I'm sure you could put back to standard with some more cutting and carving but you'll need to be good with a grinder and welder.
Contact Sheel on here as he has a nice 450 with Clive Y and ACT exhaust with Cherry bombs,, it's a hell of a noise I can tell you but it's also subtle and refined,, mines sleeved with the Catted Y and still makes 105dbs at 4000 revs,,
So the ACT set up has to be at least 110 dbs by my reckoning,, very loud.

I 1st had my exhaust sleeved and it was ok, i then fitted a Clive Y-piece and had the pre cats out. It sounded like a NASCAR racer, but it was not a nice noise and it was too loud. Have cherry bombs fitted thumbup

I have a nicely modified 500, with lots of naturally aspirated horse power... Been through a few variations but current set up is no pre-cats, no main cat (Clive F Y), and standard box (was sleeved but put back to standard when the main cat was taken out... )

Removal of the main cat released about 25bhp mid range and a similar increase in torque, which although not sounding a lot was very noticeable on the road... like very noticeable....

The sound however, is epic... proper epic... she achieves peak bhp at 6100rpm, and the howl between 4k and 6k rpm is hair raising biggrin

Similar increase in torque,, that's interesting, food for thought.
My only issue with straight through and no Catt is the strench,,, if your a regular user of your car that may get on your neves as your choking when sat in traffic.
If your going for a loud exhaust expect to feel beat up after an hour drive, brain throbbing and tedious to my mind!
Mines perfect,, but then I would say that hehe but I think it is, no smells yet a proper V8 sound, loud but not brain numbing,,

The Cherry bombs are a classic sound, I love em and they are perfect if you want loud but controlled and very very angry, hahah.

Full decat, with ACT Y piece plus ACT Supersport Exhaust (straight through, no longer available) = 127db.

Bloody loud in anyone's book.

I have a second exhaust system ACT Cherry Bomb, which gets fitted for touring. Drops the sound level to around 115db, much better for long cruises ..... according to the other half.

IMO though, there's no such thing as too loud wink

Totally agree with this post,i have done all the options over the years.
Full decat and sleeved sounds fantastic for a while then you start to appreciate how tractor like she idles in traffic.
With the rear box in tact you get the smooth purr at low speed idle round town, but when you get above 3-4000 the roar is amazing.
Currently running standard box, main cat out with Clive Y piece, and pre cats still in... exhaust is brand new stainless so just waiting for all to get coked up and take a view on pre cats,,, with cats in no mot issues

Heres a post I did years back

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

This is when Phil drove to my gaff and we swapped exhausts, his was standard and mine sleeved.

He drove away full decatt and sleeved setup

Precats out Clive. Y and full act cherrybomb system sounds fine at low revs and tick over driving through town is not an embarrassment but out on the open road and open it up and it sounds like the bats from hell.....awesome....but fine for high speed cruising. Not intrusive

Sounds like the ACT cherrybomb is my best bet then as I can keep the original exhaust in case I want to swap back. I've already got all the cats out. How much is an ACT cherrybomb ?

I'm told the noise mine currently makes (when being ragged a bit) is pretty decent. If any of you fancy coming along to the Coventry Motorfest (which I believe is free entry) next weekend I'll be there on Saturday with the TVRCC Speed Championship chaps doing some demonstration Sprint runs on the closed section of Ring Road so you can have a listen.

I all you want is loud loud loud then this won't be of interest.

But for others reading this thread and getting all overcome with teenage hormones, do remember that if you ever plan to become the ultimate hooligan you will want to do a track day some day soon.
You will want to experience 135-150 mph on the straights, cornering at well over 100 mph and chasing down other cars around a purpose built race track, all without worrying about blue lights and laser guns, pedestrians around blind bends and traffic coming the other way.

In my experience of track days, every track has a noise limit, and the highest UK noise limit at a regular track day track is 105 dB (A).
This equates to pre-cats out, main cat out and replaced by Clive Y, and a standard silencer box.
And on a damp cold day you will also need ACT bolt on silencers as well.

So before you go ahead and sleeve the exhaust, give your track day intentions a little thought.

Very good point Anthony - I was 105db at Hullavington and reduced to 95 with ACT bolt ons.

Which is why the bypass valve I have developed can be the best of both worlds.....

Here it is in operation:

Mine had an ACT Y-piece with an Offords sports back box and even though when I first got it, it sounded quite mad, like a an old school muscle car, it felt silly driving around in town with all the pops and bangs. People would tell me at the lights that they thought the exhaust had fallen off.

I took off the back box and put a standard silencer I got from a breakers yard, and then decatted the manifolds, and this I think is the best combination, reasonably civilised when you are just pootling in slow traffic, but screams when you give it the beans on the open road.
