Last night I took the beloved Chimaera 450 to Rockingham for a track evening,2 hours of open pit lane fun.
Exellent evening with only 30 peeps there and very well behaved they were too.
Got Through the Noise test 98db limit at 2/3 revs spot on 98 so all good there !
I did a 25 minute session rested for 30 mins then had 30 mins with an Instructor ,another 25 min rest and back out for a final 25 minutes.
After the 1st session I opened the bonnet to let the heat out and there was a trace of power steering fluid around the reservoir (more like a mist really,I released the cap and the fluid was boiling!
Guess I need a cooler of some kind then.
The other issue was tyres,Bridgestone RE002,s all round and they were brilliant for about 20 minutes then Huge slides were the order of the day, when back in the pits a close inspection revealed loads of graining on the tyres,I have the original 16" wheels spare so I am looking at track tyres ,Toyo 888's or similar
Does anyone have any recommendations?
The last issue-7mpg on Mr.Shells finest!!!

Power steering liquid is pretty normal considering 20 mins at full chat is actually a long time on track.
7 mpg,,, good man hehe
It's pretty twisty at Rockingham so the tyres will be getting hot,
Yes 888's will be better but they will still overheat if provoked.

Sounds like you had a good time thumbup

I've done a few trackdays in my Tvr and find 15/18 mins is ok but after that everything's just to hot, less power/more wear and because the heat transfer is massive the fronts and rear tyres go away, it becomes pointless,

15 mins is a good time level and allows the car to cool quicker between runs, brakes last longer too.

If your running the car every other 20-30 mins the car will be back upto temp so quick you can be on it as of the first proper flying lap,, 5/6 laps hard at it and a cool down lap
Sorted.

7mpg Butch,, could tell you ride bikes hehe
If a Tvr is rattling around there I might pop over to watch next time.

7mpg,,, that's a bit high, must be running lean hehe

I'll do Rocky one day as it looks a good test for both driver and machine, you obviously know the place well Butch, your cars steering fluid is just complaining,, I replaced mine for new and it still gets hot and as you say a slight mist/wetness appears around the bottle, I just rag it off and open the cap in between runs,, yeah and always open bonnet to let that heat out.
Slow gear changes and heavy brakes compared to a bike I bet, but such fun balancing g the car with its 50/50 weight transfer and lack of grip,, but oddly you can get em tucked in and turning well and getting pretty good G's all things considered.

I bet your buzzing biglaugh
I normally feel on a par with Senna afterwards hehe
It's a craic .

Sounds great, good man!

Never done Rockingham before but its on the list.

Never had PS issues although my reservoir is by the radiator and probably runs a little cooler, (and a scooby rack).

20 mins is normally enough although in a fit of enjoyment in my old chim have done a couple of 45 mins.

Triple 8s are ace tyres, that's why a lot of racers use them. There are others out there, (I have cheapy Federal 595-Rs on at the mo, not bad but took a lot of scrubbing in).

You can run the Toyos till red hot and they feel epic but with a little more controllable give in them.

Check out the prices, not too bad for standard sizes, they become expensive for the wider tyres. Shop around, there are plenty of deals out there.

I was surprised that the lines were virtually identical ,The instructor pointed out that unlike the bike line on the righthand hairpin where you turn in late and get over to the inside of the track (the line I had been using which was resulting is massive slides and quite a bit of tyre smoke!!) If i turned in late but let the car run out to the outside curb I could apply more power sooner = Quicker laps.
At the moment i am still on std brakes (haven't had time to fit the brembo's yet) but I can honestly say I didn't have any issues at all with them.
After 20 minutes with the instructor I was consistently using one gear higher a lot of the time.
I still couldn't catch the Pesky MX5 though!!

FI is very popular with MX5s.

LOL - an LS3 MX5 - that must be mental.

Glad you are enjoying your car on track. Not much left to say regarding your original query as it has been answered. I normally do 15 minutes at a time as per Alun's advice, it is a road car not a track car so doesn't have all the necessary oil coolers, gearbox oil coolers etc etc to survive sustained periods of track action.

I think you'll like the Brembo's,, I've got the road pads for the BMW 7 series,, if I was tracking the car more often I'd go for something slightly more aggressive so keep that in mind Butch.
Anthony (Qbee ) uses Hawk pads which seem pretty good, not that I've tried them but I have been in the car and it did stop well.

The standard brakes are ok, good even, but something like the Brembo's are different class and with the right pads and discs I think you'll find yourself barrelling into corners with far more confidence and braking a lot later.

I've never had a driving lesson in my life, fking need one though, track knowledge and an instructor who knows the secrets can really push you on in no time.

It's just great to hear of another Tvr being driven by the scruff of its neck.
Good on you Butch. thumbup

Rockingham is a very abrasive surface, it kills tyres.

Keep an eye on hot tyre pressures, front left will continue to inflate and tyres should be monitored and reset.
