I had that problem before I replaced the gearbox oil in my 94 Chimaera which has the Rover box in it. Removed ATF that was in it and filled it with Castrol Syntrans 75/90. Before you rush and change the oil, make sure you are getting the right oil for the box. The later T5 boxes need to have an ATF type oil as far as I know, and not the Syntrans type oil.

It also made the gear changes much easier.

I will never know if just filling the box back up to the required level made the difference, or it was changing the type of oil.

Prepare for another lengthy 'which gearbox oil' debate argue

The gear knob does get hot. Some have modified theirs to prevent this. Sit back and wait for the suggestions ears
