I'm no Blitz, but the timing tweek was probably pot luck.

Have you tried another working AFM

I have one off my 4.6 that's no longer required, I'd try swapping yours for one that's known to work and see if that's the culprit, if it is then your welcome to contact me as I'm likely to off load my old CUX as I'll never use it again.

Thanks Al, seems sensible but my thinking is that if the timing is altered to compensate for a dodgy afm the replacing it with a good one won't tell me anything unless I can adjust the timing to match. I can probably wield a spanner enough to swap out an afm but ignition timing is beyond my powers!
Cheers, Stu

My TVR guru fitted a brand new set of extenders March 2015 at the annual swervice, as mine looked "tatty".
They were sourced from an unimpeachable source and were Beru.

In the following six months I spent a lot of time chasing rough running misfires, and had a total of seven failures among the new set of extenders.
Now binned and replaced with a tenner's worth of fibre glass thermal socks.
Not had any running issues since.

Please remove the extenders and plug the leads straight onto the plugs, clip the leads so they aren't touching each other or anything seriously hot, and see if that cures it. Won't take you more than ten minutes.

Ok, so ran the car without the extenders today and no better unfortunately. Looks like the afm is still the favourite though but still not sure about the timing thing. Anybody know if the non standard ignition timing might be to compensate for a dodgy afm? If so, presumably I will need to alter the timing when a good afm is fitted?

Cheers.

You should not be messing around with the timing- it has a "factory" setting and thats where it should be on a stock engine. You may simply have got a bad fuel mixture to run better with different timing as the burn speed will be different, but thats not the fix. Get the timing put back (8' at idle is a good starting point) and then try another AFM.
