Hi, First post on the site
I am hoping to buy a new car and am having trouble deciding what - thought maybe I'd get some better knowledge from here!!

VW Jetta 1.9TDI, Honda Civic 2.2 CDTI or VW Passat 1.9TDI

Which car do you recommend for reliability, MPG and overall quality? The cars are all high mileage (governed by budget) Due to the high mileage I will need to spend money on it when I get it (mainly cambelt and waterpump)?? Dont mind spending some money if the car needs it (peace of mind) but hoping not to spend thousands!!!

My routes that I drive are mainly town driving with a/b roads and 2 long motorway journeys a week....

Thanks smile

I suggest you use the search function, the merits of those cars have been discussed many times and there are several threads covering them from the last few months alone (although golf not Jetta, but they're the same)

Thanks - I have read some threads so far regarding the cars, but was hoping to get some more recent opinions as everyone has different views..

What's your budget?

How many miles do you do per year? If it's below 12k then I'd be looking for a petrol.

Have you sat in a Civic - I couldn't get comfy - Not a problem I've had with many cars.

Budget is £3500 to £4000 max and I roughly do 15-18k

I haven't as of yet, but was looking at the civic due to its reliable engine

If you're looking for a Civic then look for a Type S GT.

2008 Type S GT 80k 140bhp

I'd probably go for the Mondeo with it's nicer ride.

2007 Titanium X 80k 140bhp FSH

2009 Focus Titanium 83k 140bhp

An out there choice is an Alfa 159 if it's the 2.4 then they're a very strong drivetrain the suspension bushes are a bit soft though.

2007 Alfa 159 2.4 Lusso 200bhp 86k FSH

Honda-no, cracked manifolds, dmf failures, clutches going, and they drive terribly.

I have been doing extensive research over the past few days and am swaying towards a skoda octavia 1.9tdi!!! I've been looking on autotrader and they all seem to be the 2.0 diesels

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Would you pay that price for that car or is the price a bit much for what it is??

A Mercedes 2.2 diesel with the auto box is good for high miles. Mine is beyond 200,000 is used on a daily basis and seems to be fine.

Haha all the old pd 1.9s have been snatched up by taxi drivers now, theres always a load for sale with interstellar mileage. 2.0 CR diesel is still a good motor. Not as bombproof as the 1.9 (which DID have a few niggles) but still good.

Looks OK. I would expect it to need cam belt doing again. And surely that clutch won't be around much longer

+1 to the above, expect to replace the cambelt asap & also expect the clutch & bushes to need replacing to.

Good choice. I service one of these with 220k. It had a new dmf/clutch/turbo around 100k. Super drive.
