Hi there, i'm looking for people's experience and advice regarding the E60 530d and 535d.
I'm looking at the 230bhp 530d version and would like to know how to tell the difference between it and the 215hp version. I know they changed in 2006, but also that some earlier cars could have been registered as 2006.

Although the 530d is all i need, i can't help but look at the 535ds as they are the same price to buy and, well, they have more power :-)

What are they like on fuel compared to the 530d? My daily commute is about 40 miles, with half of that on a dual carriage way so, if they aren't much worse, then i may get one.

Also, what's the reliability like on the 535d? Is the auto ok dealing with the extra power?

Finally, Looking over the net there are quite a few bmw forums around, does anybody have any recommendations?

Cheers

I had a 535D from new on an 05 plate and it was a great car yes

I did 66,000 miles in the car and it performed faultlessly and averaged 27.61mpg over the last 15000 miles (sadly I have an app that I use to track ALL expenses on my cars smile ) That was mainly town driving with the odd long summer holiday thrown in for fun.

Rear tyres lasted me about 10,000 miles, other than that routine servicing, nothing major going wrong but I would advise you consider a warranty. The engine is a work of art and if anything decides to pack up costs can escalate I'm sure.

As a machine they are great, they are comfortable, a great cruiser and quite fast when you want them to be - I had mine mapped by DMS and that also made a difference whistle

Mine was actually used for an autocrat shoot some years ago

Ignore the journo rubbish about the 911 wink

All in all a great allrounder.

Yeah, where the manifold joins the turbos and exhaust does look especially complicated.
What mpg did you get on longer runs? Most of my driving is dual carriageway and single lane national speed limit type driving.

Best I got was mid-thirties on a run.

There are 2 types of E60 535d the
Pre LCI 2.9 272bhp
LCI 3ltr 286bhp

The latter is VASTLY better on fuel whereas the former isn't that much better than the 545i which is why Top Gear did the track test of the two cars.

Cannot be much difference in it £ wise to buy these days -- especially as the F10 535ds are creeping into £12-13k territory a car which is then over 5 years older 2 fewer gears much less power etc.

And 10k for rear tyres smile.

I think I've done 30k on my entire set with plenty left I'm hoping for 45k out of them.

F10 535d M Sport.

Are you sure - LCI was 07 not 05? 05 would have been one of the very first 535d's, I think the first were on 54 plates.

Really that's what BMW are offering as trade in.

Sorry, you're correct and well spotted wink My plate was an 05 however the car was an 07 (hence memory loss!) and I picked it up around July 07 from memory

If you look at the images of my car in the magazine you'll see the paddles and other LCi bits.

Actually your right the Autotrader prices seem to put them much higher. Infact none have even close to my spec - but some are newer and upgraded engine. So I'd guess a min £19k for mine hmm not bad/I'd not get the same if I sold and then re purchased a different example. There is one newer one for sale silver looks nice but then you see that all 4 discs are ruined that's £1k discs alone then the pads on top..

That's trade-in not actual sale prices and besides, trade-in prices are not really a useful indication of value anyway as they are often offset or otherwise against the deal on the newer car.

Exactly. The money F10's still seem to command at 5-6 year old is very odd and seems to defy any real logic. You need as much as £20k for a decent 6 year old one and there are year old ones for only 7k more on the AUC site. It seems values of nearly new ones have taken a big hammering yet the old ones are clinging on.

I'd say it's also supply - people buy new for a bit then the used buy number 2 buys and simply runs it for a very long time meaning those which are for sale are rare ish. It is a rare model in any case so a loaded model is one certainly to keep / then when you have had enough search out another used bargin and run for 10 years again.

Sticking in Autotrader 535d M sport the cheapest seems to be just shy of £6k for a Sept 2004 version

If that's the case then this car is 6 years older than mine as such based on this as the logical path then my own car should only now depreciate £13k in 6 years.. And that's worst case as the car o mention is bottom of the market in standard spec.

Hmm vet intersting.

I'll probably stick with the 530d then, if the early 535d isn't much better on fuel than the 545.
The only 535d's i've come across, in my budget, are the 2004-2006 cars.
I want something that'll get me high 30s on my commute, while still have a decent amount of power.

The E60 530d will not achieve that
