I've got only one use for a grease gun and it's only going to be once a year, so I really can't justify spending more than the bare minimum. If it were for anything else I'd be able to use one at work, but the exhaust has to be removed to do the driveshafts so it's a home job. The problem is that all of the cheap ones have scalding reviews of broken nipples and explosions, does anyone know of one that works for under a score or another way to do the job?

This is a mini grease gun. Cant comment on its suitability but it is cheap enough.

That should do the job, and I find those little push type better than a full size grease, they are much better for getting into grease nipples on UJ's because the nipple thing on the end is smaller.

ETA thought that was a bit expensive, found a cheaper onesmile

I've just bought one of these, handy as you don't get covered in grease loading it and it has a flex nozzle for the awkward nippleshttps://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007Z1QU6A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have used a Wanner gun for years, both solid and flexible nipple, Swiss made, high pressure, usually one or two on ebygum.

It will also push oil, I used it on my trunnions rolleyes yes, really!
So much so when I saw one at a boot sale for a tenner I bought that too specifically for oil.

Very similar gun to discopotatoes version...one of which is on ebygum this morning for 8.99 delivered !!

Well it was actually one done for a charity drive so I didnt argue cost!

Wanner guns in good condition can sell £30 upwards, but usually available around 15 quid. Good quality stuff compared with some of the cheap Chinese stuff...bent a mates gun handle when it was was used on an admittedly gummed up nipple, cheap version, put my Wanner on it and blew it away!

Yep, thats the one, worth buying even second-hand in preference to cheap import.

Wanner are undoubtedly very good but lets put this in perspective, the average TVR owner is going to grease two nipples perhaps twice a year on a cherished car that's probably only done a couple of thousand miles between greasings.

Whatever you buy or use is not exactly having a hard life wink

True, but for just over 20 quid you have the pleasure of using a decent bit of kit that you can hand down to your children!

But I have a son who is a mechanic!

Slightly off topic but he reckons he spends £100 a week on tools! He has just bought a lovely snap on torch, £110 plus VAT!

2nd hand is a good shout, I'm watching the ebay ones to see if I can get a bargain thumbup

I've just read so many reviews on the cheap ones getting stuck and breaking nipples on the first go or just leaking from everywhere that I'm just not expecting any of them to work, but as said it's going to be used on 2 nipples once a year. I also know that if I spend proper money on one that it's going to go walkies because I'll lend it out as I never use it and then forget who I gave it to, then I'll end up with 2 of the bloody things after buying another and getting the old one back. I have 3 battery drills because of this hehe

long time ago now but I was probably paying (allowing for inflation) just as much back to the Snap On man every week. Pay packet in your hand Friday lunchtime, half of it gone two hours later when he'd been smile

Ha, Ha.. My first one I used as a youngster whilst my dad showed me what they did... and that the bits you put grease into were REALLY called nipples !!

It was a Wanner.... I still use that gun on the old Triumphs, Tractors big and small etc..it must be 50 years old,. the second gun was bought secondhand... and my lad wants it......... laugh

Just had look and there are loads on the net secondhand, choose one that looks good from the outside too, they are hard wearing cases and if they look like they have been down the street, run over, etc then they probably have !!

Just found company selling new ones at £70 !! gulp, they have gone up a bit !

No, not many nips on new cars except (perhaps surprisingly) Jap 4x4s where you can find 3 on each of 2 prop shafts and often one per front swivel, although these often have just a blanking screw in the hole, they are still meant to be greased.
The biggest issue is not the make/cost of gun but the size of the nozzle, most are too wide to get between the yokes of many UJs to the central nip. That's where a little 'push' type comes in handy without the bulk of the latching claws. My push one is a sweet little Tecalamit that looks as though it's been handed down at least three generations!
