I nickel plated my dipstick and the oil filler cap, (minus plastic) and petrol cap, very nice too and free of charge which is even better.

Owdjadothatthen? Re oil filler cap, the only bit that really shows is the plastic, so...?

I can feel a bit of kitchen chemisty coming on!

Incidentally, as griff2be said, that a soft wire brush is great for getting corrosion and water spots off rough cats metal, like the alternator and thngy near the nearside rocker cover. I found a pack of three small wirebrushes (in varying toughnesses) like large toothbrushes for £1 in a local hardware shop.

griff2be: your reply was so similar to mine I thought I'd managed to post wth your name - duh!

What about steam cleaming the engine bay. Is that a good idea anyone????? I'm not into polishing what people don't see as such - but I would like a nice clean engine bay though.

For the serious polishers though. What about giving the chasis some Chrome Plating.

If your very careful you can cut the orange plastic part off the cap. Mine was some sort of light alloy underneath. They may not all be like that. It is basically the same shape but smaller and silvery now.

Today I noticed that my ugly orange oil filler cap was split - didn't immediately detect that there was a beautiful swan lurking underneath. So maybe I'll hack away tomorrow or give it a kiss. Charming!

Failing that where can I get an alloy cap to fit?

Oh by the way, has anyone got a link to a site where I can get an aluminium blanking plate (2 actually) so I can get rid of the ashtrays? I'm fed up with passengers opening it when trying to find the door handles to get out!

They might do the blanking plates too as well, can't remember.

Edited to say went to the above site to check the URL and couldn't find the blanking plates.

Mine was the same. Now an alloy filler cap. tap the orange off, so I am told,

Yes they do blanking plates or alloy ashtrays. I think they also have an alloy filler neck for the oil, not just the alloy oil cap (which there is a choice of).

Thanks - but don't really want to shell out £47 for ashtrays when all I want to do is blank them off. Can't see any blanking plates on the Leven site but it strikes me that a simple alloy plate with TVR logo might be quite a nice line extension for Leven. I'd pay them £25 for a pair which could be mounted with spring clips. Any other suggestions?

No, they did have straight blanking plates I'm sure.

... but they're not there now! Must be me age!

Get some large clean towels or sheets and drape them over the wings to protect them before you start. Don't be tempted to remove the bonnet on your jack, you WILL scratch the paintwork badly. Been there!

With the wings protected you should be able to lean across into the bay to clean round the rad etc.

Quick tip for polishing the tanks (if you get that far!) - get a fairly large cloth, dabble some Solvol or other metal polish on the tanks then wrap the cloth right around the tank like a tournique, looped right around. Pull the two ends back and forth in a sawing motion and the tanks will be buffed up in no time.

For some reason my Chim doesn't have ashtrays at all.

Maybe Big M specced it when new (see General Gassing)

in fact you can - it's pretty easy - just release the 2 catches, take a deep breath - and HEAVE ! Looks good in the living room too.

I find that having a variety of car care products has its rewards....

None of those look used - do you spend more time buying products than actually cleaning the car?!!!

We know that a Griff bonnet can be removed on your todd, but the gentleman in question has a Chimaera and I don't think its as easy.

Beer tonight? Any others in the Reading area interested? I'll post something separately.

(P.S. I've seen Ed actually use at least one of the car care products once. Trouble is he shops at CostCo, so he buys 15 of everything!)
