IMHO whatever you do make sure it's a V8!

Early Chimps/Griffs are going to be in your price range, but they will probably need a fews bits doing. If you are into getting your hands dirty they may be an option.

You should get a really nice V8s or a totally immaculate big wedge for that money

I would have let you have my cherished pre-cat Griff for 12K last month, but I p/xed it so it is a bit more expensive here. There aren't many better examples though.

Pretty much agree with Danny. Either a v8s or a good wedge - I always wanted a 450SEAC but I think that's way out of the price range. An immaculate 400/450SE might be possible.
Good luck

I think you should vote with your eyes.

This has really been said already, but you can choose from:

1) a 'Curvy' - eg an early Griff or Chimp. This will get you a car that is one of the best known TVRs and 'almost' a current model.

2) a Wedge

3) a V8S

V8S's actually went up to K reg so they're not as old as you may think. Not sure when the last Wedge was made.

For your £12K you will a very good V8S or big Wedge, or a possibly-not-so-good Curvy (though you might stumble on a distress sale).

All are V8s, all sound great(with possible exception of Chimp due to cats) so, as always, my advice is - pick the one you like the look of best!

What a great time you are at - the dosh is ready and all you have to do is buy a TVR with it! The words 'Kid' and 'Sweetshop' spring to mind...! You only come this way once so enjoy it - I am sure you will

Musn't forget the other advice, blag a ride in a few. Find out where the local club meets. Never met anyone yet that will refuse the slenderest of excuses for a good blat.

I have 911 3.0 SC and a 350i for days when the sun is shining. They make a great combination.

'The 5.0 Griff doesn't have cats then ... ?'

It certainly does, but for £12K he'll be looking at a 4.0, which will be pre-cat (all registered by 31/12/92). By contrast Chimps didn't turn up until 1993, hence they are all catted.

Blimey never heard of let alone seen a Cerb for £10K ........
I suppose if the misses parks her car out side there will be room for one beside's the S in the garage for the not so dry days (thats about 300 of them ). I knew I had a double garage built for a reason .

Back on topic, for an unbiased view I'd say get the V8S . They are relatively rare (400 made), pre cat sound wonderful, although they made them up to and including 94 so therefore also come in catted form also know as the V8SC (mine is one ) the very last one was a M reg BTW, but then again they still sound far better than the equiv 400Chim/griff maybe due to the exhaust system routing.
As far as the 4 ltr's go, in standard un-max powered trim , they probably have the edge on all over versions of the same size due to a lighter overall car weight. Or in my case it balances out for the weight of the driver so all is equal.

For a true unbiased view a early stonking 400 Griff takes some beating on the looks front, but it will never be a 500.

A fav of mine has to be the 400/450 SE wedges, not withstanding a SEAC, probably the best sounding of all TVR's.

As they say on some obscure telly programme the 'choice is yours'.

Happy hunting

Mr. Hoffman, does the 911 not tend to put the 350i to shame in a lot of ways? I've been meaning to ask you for a while. Surely you are in a better position than most of us to compare the beasts; is it really worthwhile having the 350, or do you use it when you are slumming:
Only 911 experience I've had was welding a patch of galvanised tin on the inner wing of my boss's '82 targa. The oil cooler pipes trapped a load of crud against the wing and it rotted through. The git never even took me out for a spin in the thing.
Apart from that I had a Skoda Rapid and the dash layout was similarly haphazard...;-D

Ian - the wedge is by far the most fun to drive and I would pick it nearly everytime. The only 2 exceptions are when it's raining (I always drive with the hood down if poss), and when I have a long motorway trip during working hours and need to use the phone a lot (as I have to slow down to hear the other person speak).

I posted a mail on the tvr list a while back comparing the two - you can probably find it in the archive
