friend of mine bought a griff 500 for 11k recently. also look for cheap early cerbies .. one went for 9750 a couple of weeks ago. Bugger!!

£9750??

Bloody hell, do you have details? I'd be interested to know whay they got for them money (spec, miles, condition).

D.

one was water damaged, wanted carpets and maybe seats i think .. easy repair. the other was a very faded rosso pearl so wanted painting - a doddle to anyone with their own paint shop, or a grand to get painted elsewhere. I'd have just painted it any old dark metallic red colour, plastered it in joospeed stickers and blasted it round every track going with the 5k I'd saved. makes a good track day tvr at 10k doesn't it?

For a true unbiased view a early stonking 400 Griff takes some beating on the looks front, but it will never be a 500.

Hmm, can't agree with you there - a Griff's definately a Griff despite what pulls it along - I've worried a lot of 500 owners with mine and I'm never left disappointed with the car even after driving both Griffith and Chimeara 500's

Now is THE time to get a Griffith as IMHO they are already classics and as such will be in demand for some time to come.....

If you just want one for driving (rather than polishing ) the deals are out there, wait for October, people will be spinning them all over the place then

Like the idea of a £10 Cerbera, stripped out, race buckets, etc, as long as it's mechanically sound I can live with it being a bit of a project at that price

'The 5.0 Griff doesn't have cats then ... ?'

It certainly does, but for £12K he'll be looking at a 4.0, which will be pre-cat (all registered by 31/12/92). By contrast Chimps didn't turn up until 1993, hence they are all catted.

Actually no. The cat or not to cat a car is based on when the chassis was made so there a lot of K reg 1993 Griffi that don't need cats cos the chassis was made at 23.58 on the 31st of December 1992. The Chimpari had chassis made after that so they need cats.

I also like the idea of a £10 Cerbera. In fact, I'll have a couple.

the day cerbies seem slow is the day I'd hand my licence back as it'll obviously be the same day I lost all sense of reality

Andy yours is either sorted (Chipped or some such) or the 500's you've worried have been taking it easy

Seriously though I agree there is not actually that much difference in performance on the road between the various cars, normally just the nut behind the wheel. On a similar note a well driven V6 S would keep up with most other Tivs a to b if driven hard (subject to the no long dual carriageway straights clauses etc), thats not to say with extra effort you couldn't lose it
The Griff is starting to gain that cult status, whether they will always be is another thing, if you're after exclusivity in a Griff then your 400 or a 4.3 are certainly the rarer model.

I said that once on here (when I had only been a member for a couple of months) and was roundly slated for talking arse.

I stand by it though and am glad someone else agrees.

Agree with the real driving comments, we used to regularly hoon around with a 4.3 pre cat Grif, my 4.0 Chimaera, and a V6 S on the open road there was no real difference in performance, or to put it another way we couldn't shake off the pesky S Now the Grif has transformed into a 4.5 Cerb, I can just about keep up if I drive like a qualifying lap, just as long as the straight bits aren't too long

True. For 'car registered by 31/12/92' read 'chassis registered by 31/12/92'. But my point was that early Griffs (ie 4.x) are not catted whilst all Chimps are.

(PS That's what your book says so you have to agree!)

I agree too, and I've had the benefit of owning both at the same time. Major difference (IMHO) is pulling power towards and beyond 100mph, which doesn't get used often. Have to say the 4.0 was a nicer drive.

Nope my Griff is completely standard (except for the later top wishbones which improve the handling) all the 500's I've gone up against have beaten me up to 60 but then I can match them up to 'achievable' driving limits within Surrey its surrounding counties.

Best match I've ever done is kept up with a Griff 500 move for move cross country for about half an hour in my 3000M which I was quite pleased about.

As for exclusivity I've only ever seen 2 other Griff 400's and they were both in the same colour as mine!!

Never mind us - it's what *you* think that counts. It's your loot and you'll be driving it!
