Hi Dean

I would use a 5w-30 oil

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-653-5w-30.aspx

The best ones there are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Mobil ESP, Castrol Edge, Millers XF, Fuchs GT1 and Redline, but the Motul Eco-Energy, Millers XSS and Fuchs XTR are good cheaper alternatives.

Cheers

Hi,
Had a good read through all this, mainly seeing what I could learn about engine oils and lubrication, and also to get solid advice for the Speed6 engine in my TVR Sagaris.

........ Engine: TVR 4.0 Speed6 'S' spec (De-catted)
........ Mileage: 26k
........ Miles/yr: 7k
........ Driving Style: Always warmed up, spirited driving (I love 2nd and 3rd gears!!), fast roads.
........ Track Days: One or two so far biggrin

You nearly always recommend 0w40 or 5w40 fully synthetic I think, but sometimes variations like 10w50. So I have a couple of questions.

1. What would you recommend based on the above.
2. What is the differences between 0w40, 5w40 and things like 10w50 ?? (what do the numbers mean ??)
3. Is ZDDP content important for the Speed6 ?
4. If ZDDP is important, is it high percentage in the oils you've recommended ??

Many Thanks in advance.
Mike

Hi

For your car, I'd be looking at a 5w-40. Your engine is designed to run on a 0w-40 or 5w-40 and you get a much better range of quality 5w-40s than of 0w-40s.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

This explains what the numbers mean

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pdfs/tech-articles/Engin...

ZDDP levels are not as important as a lot of people make out, especially when quality oils are used. All oils that are API SL and earlier do not have reduced ZDDP levels, it's only SM and SN oils that have reduced ZDDP amounts, but those oils generally aren't what you'd choose for things that traditionally use higher ZDDP oils.

Above, where I recommended some oils for your car, the ones that I listed as the best ones are all race quality oils. As they are ester based, that covers the need for ZDDP, but they have high ZDDP levels anyway.

Cheers

Hi Guys,
Oil advice please.
1987 TVR S1 2.8 V6 Ford Engine, nearly 67,000 miles, not modified from TVR spec.
Sunny weekend use, all year, careful warm-up, then spirited A & B road driving, long motorway trips and touring, can sit unused for a couple of weeks at a time waiting for the rain to stop {That's Manchester for you!).
No track days so far, but hoping for a few sedate laps of Spa & Nurburgring in May.

Gearbox is 5-speed Ford as standard, Back axle is not LSD.
Thanks
Glen

Hello Tim,

I'm after a couple of 5l containers of oil for my '97 Cerbera 4.2 - the current stuff is Millers XFS 5w/50 fully synthetic - I've checked on your website, and this is the stuff you'd recommend.

I am also looking for some oil for my other half's Mini Cooper S - it's an '07 plate, but nor sure which pack it has on it (Chilli/pepper etc..)

What would you suggest for that?

And would you like me to order via your website?

Cheers

Tom

Opieoilman - I see you stock GULF at a reasonable cost. Would you recommend this for my Griff 500 and if so, 5-40 or 10-40 ? Or what ? I assume full on race oil would be inadvisable?

Cheers

For some reason we don't always get notifications of this thread so you are better off either posting in our main recommendations thread or emailing us on sales@opieoils.co.uk

A 10w-50 is ideal for your car and these are the ones that we stock.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car. Unfortunately there isn't a Gulf 10w-50

Cheers

Tim
