Hello,

I normally fill up my car with Optimax (as I am sure you all do). However, since the nearest Shell is 10 miles away I sometimes have to make do with a small amount of 97 RON to get me to the Optimax pump.

Since returning from le Mans last Monday I have been unable to find anywhere that has 97RON. They ALL seem to be out and have been for a week.

Has anyone else found this?

I had to put 20 quids worth of 95RON today - nasty - as the Optimax fountain was dry too.

What is happening?

That's interesting, noodles, we tried to fill up with superunleaded at a BP station on the way back from Castle Combe yesterday, and they had none, carried on and a Texaco had none either, so stuck £10 unleaded in for now. Hmm.

Strange,

One week and counting - perhaps Bedford has some sort of prohibition?

Makes you angry when in France you can buy BP 98RON and BP in the UK only has 97. Why?

BB - I don't mind that run out to Ampthill - it gives filling up more of a purpose. That road is nice too (allowing for the blatant scameras). I love that little tunnel and often pass under it at about 7am (those couple of houses must know all about it).

I hope you all haven't drained the Shell garage on the A420 (just outside Castle Combe) of Optimax It's all ours drink, and there isn't a Shell garage for miles (think the next closest is Swindon!)
Chippenham just has a selection of BP and other non Optimax garages

It wasn't a choice to go for BP, that was the first garage we came to when starting to think better fill up. I generally go for Optimax if possible - when I first tried it the car seemed even thirstier than usual, but the more I use it the happier he seems! If I turn the other way from home the nearest garage is a Texaco with Superunleaded, which is OK.

edited to add...but not as good.

Whilst my modern shopping trolleys don't mind BP, they do seem to like Optimax more. However, my 1972 GT6 pinks like mad, and generally drives like a piece of sh1t on BP, coughing and spluttering, but is fine on Optimax (smoother, better when cold, etc etc....)

BP in Bedford had some Super in today - but it ran out very quickly. It seems to be still dry.

Fortunately Optimax is back on tap.

Prices are crazy:

97RON at BP 86.9p

98.6RON at Shell (Optimax) - 81.9p

So, the better petrol is cheaper. Quite bizarre.

TUS88N - over here in your birthplace we don't get Optimax (we're supplied by Shell Ireland and donkeys don't run on Optimax). I use Millars Octane Booster with standard (cheapo Omeath) unleaded - goes very well on it too!

PS Sorry T88CAN I got your name wrong - never could understand those Irish name spellings!

For Optimax fiends would it be an idea to carry a bottle of octane booster in the boot for those low-ocatne moments? or wuld that clash somehow with the proper stuff when you found it again? I recall that octane boosters are based on one of about three different chemicals - I wonder which one Optimax uses?

Hey Noodles. You should pop down to Shefford. They have lots of options at the Esso Garage on the bye-pass ans a few less at the Ford Garage on Ampthill road. Fill up tonight and you could join us at the Red Lion at Deadman's Cross on the A600...

Well sorry to rub it in but there are two Optimax pumps within 3 miles and one 5 miles away!

Bit expensive though so I reserve it for when I'm a little bit 'burnt hole in the pocket'!

Hmmm.... my shopping trolleys seem to do more to the gallon on Optimax, outwaying the extra expense (just). I don't much care what the triumph does to the gallon, but it loves the stuf [Optimax], and I hope to keep that view when I get a TVR (shortly, hopefully....)

Thanks Lee,

I cannot make it tonight (sorry for not replying to your other thread) as I am going fishing! I'll certainly make the next one.
