Hey popeye what oil yer using.
Discussion
you beauty! been looking for something synthetic and a bit thicker than water, sounds just the job.
Jessica, the engine is an old design and likes thick stuff (V8 Developments use straight 50W!) but this is mineral which does not like the heat these cars generate and it breaks down quickly.
The heaviest synthetic is the way to go as it stands up to heat better

My v8 always like 20/50, nothing thinner would do. I used amsoil and kennedy oils which were synthetic and with a price to match. Eventually I found a ford branded/dealer oil for a good price and with a very good API specification so I used that. It was cheap enough to enable regular changes and was fine with my turbo's even at that weight.
Mobil 1 0/40 in my Griff 500. 12000 miles ago it used a fairly small amount but it probably uses 3/4 litre per 1000 miles now (3 trackdays and generally more "appropriate" use than it had with its former owner)
Do you not like Mobil 1 because it's expensive and you have to keep topping it up or do you think it is actually doing harm? I've always thought that the 0 rating means it gets around the engine quickly when cold so reducing wear? Have I got it wrong?

price has nowt to do with it, ask any of the V8 engine specialists on the home page links and come back with their response.

You are right but....
My engine never liked it because it was so thin and hated it in the summer. Rovers were designed after the ark and in those days clearances were bigger especially if compared with the multivalve hi-tech motors around nowadays. Thick oils have plenty of volume. My engine would rattle a bit with Mob 1. It was quiet with 20/50. I think Mob 1 was really designed for the modern stuff. I wouldn't use it again.

yeah but your engine was designed this decade Geoff, should think a lightweight oil would be fine for yours, actully I wonder how old the Buick lump is, 30/40 years old?
The Buick/Rover lump first went into the P5 in 1968.
So you would be looking a few years prior to that.
Don't know whether it ever made it into a Buick car though.
Wasn't it intended for the Skylark??
The Castrol RS 10W60 is the oil to use according to the dealers i spoke over here. The oil is fully synthetic. The Dutch dealer (Nimag) and the German (Sauter) both advised me to use this oil. Loads of people with (reasonably) fast cars like scoobys and evo's use the stuff in their cars i've heard. I use the stuff all year round. You can buy it at the local Brezan store, dunno if you have that store in the UK. I've emailed to Castrol in Germany (very helpful engineers) and they told me that the oil is very good in coping with the potentialy extreme heat in the TVR V8. You should offcourse keep the regular oilchange interval. A friend of mine took his engine apart 6 months ago and it has been standing in his garage dripping for several months. When he finaly got to taking it apart the camshaft still had a thick coat of Castrol on it. Thats what you want for your engine when you start it after a winter break.
Castrol by the way is one of the few companys that developes and tests their oil dopes themselve. Many companys just buy the stuff from one the big players in the oil busines.
Fred
PS i don't work for Castrol, i have no Castrol shares (if they exist) and don't sell the stuff either. Just a happy customer.
