Bad luck!

But this is what it looks like when a piston is gone

That's what I saw a few days ago on removing the head, thankfully on my daily driver not my TVR.
Wow, what car was that on?

That's a mere trifle compared to my head ache Dereck , just lifted the head off mine after Thruxton failure

all four pistons gone

and the head

Big ouch! Not only a dropped valve but looks like you got ignition as well judging by what looks like a broken piston at the weak point.

The ring didn't break Peter. That's a piece of the piston from between the top and second ring.
The ring gaps have closed and the rings have then pushed up (or down) breaking the piston

The ring as stalled/seized for a moment (no more gap to expand) doing that Derek hence the bore score.... but your on the money ring gap too tight for your NOS shot probably frown hope you get out of this with not to much outlay wink

Ive just spoke to Roland at ACR and he mentioned that the ring ends would be shiney if they had closed. But I suspect the ends could get sooted up soon again though so the jury is still out on wether the gaps closed or not.
I noticed number 2 ring on the broken piston looked out of shape so I placed it in the bore....

That is my rear engined turbo charged two door cabriolet - Yup a 2001 599cc Smart ForTwo.

Fortunately a replacement engine (less ancillaries) was just £300. It should be running again by Sunday.

Do you mean Smartcar?
If so my mates got an engine for one of those that's built to run nos!
He's also got lift up doors rather than opening ones, mad little car.

So a route around the shoe shops of Derbyshire?
My wife will be up for that - the promise of shopping is the only way I can get her in the TVR passenger seat. furious
