Craig's guys do a sterling job but getting all the speeds right for every car flying through the beams at near 200mph must be nigh impossible and reading it oneself at this speed even harder not to mention the possibility of DeResque errors creeping into timing equipment....

IMHO everyone (who is actually bothered about their top speed - ie saddos like me) should buy a Performance box and it is easy to see how the speeds vary very little from run to run and they are pretty infallible.

I give you my 209mph run wink

Please see my post above..... no-one actually noticed (probably because its so bloody smallhehe) the recorded GPS speed for my vmax in the pic above was in fact GPS 207.96 NOT the 209 seen on the boards....

Vmax200 is a private coming together of likeminded people and extreme machinery with one goal: to achieve their maximum ground speed on a 2 mile, straight runway.

No mention that it is being "officially" recorded.... it is for fun that is all hence why it is appropriate IMO for Kavi1 to bang on about his 206mph on the speedo, 9E seeing 212mph on the speedo and our friend in the Ferrari seeing 202... its all part of the fun, remember DeR once had the hand of god shove him up over 200mph smokin

As I say above if you want to know your real GPS top speed then spend your £300 quid in the link below and you can analyze every run you do - it adds to the fun and is pretty much indisputable and you can always ask the Performance Box Techies to check your data if you get called out !
http://www.performancebox.co.uk/prices.html

Oh and if you are brave/stupid enough to keep the hammer down after the beams to impress with your speed good luck to you but the Performance Box also records distance so you're rumbled there to (if anyone is arsed rolleyes|

Craig IMO vboxes will result in late braking after the beams and another 9ff incident. The best thing would be remote boards at the start line either controlled directly from the timing equipment or manually entered immediately after each run. I have the same headache at Thunder Road fwiw

That's it. Beams not accurate within 0.5%. I'm off. I'm never ever ever going, as that Craig bloke clearly doesn't know what he's doing.

Especially as the GPS will be within 0.5% - it could have actually said 210mph.......

we generally work through what people have seen, add them to this thread, any that people are unsure of I can look up and add in then they will go on the vmax200 leaderboard on www.vmax200.com in the next week or so. Has always worked well that way in the past. Magic, I seem to recall a 168 for you but I can check again when home if you're unsure.

And as an old hand, I hope it continues that way. The discussion before the final reveal is half the fun post event.

Jez, I see what you mean that maybe people keep pushing, but I never actually look at my vbox until after the run. I have never been able to see the score on the board either when going through the timing gear. When I spoke to Toby the other day he never looks at his speedo, yet I do - it is how I judge so I suppose each of us are different.

As to where the beams are placed, then I think that is more open to debate. IMO they should not be so far down the runway and I am not the only one to think that. The problem is that if you pulled them back, then the scores on the doors would be less for most, which I suppose is not the aim.

After a day of running 199 consistantly its human nature to push harder if the limit is self imposed. You need beams to make it pointless to continue after.
Thats also why although Vbox is a great tool, and I used it myself at the weekend (as well as several other people, mine, that is) it will eventually lead to another 9ff type incident if Vbox figures are allowed into the Vmax numbers.

Its all a great day out for sure, but as cars are getting faster and faster the risk of accident has gone way up, especially as a fair few cars have modified engines but pretty much stock brakes.
With regard to pulling back the beams, Ken you may be right, its the only way to reset the magic 200 nowsmile
Published official speeds will at least have everyone braking at the right point if they know that GPS speeds are as acceptable as speedo speed.

Nothing wrong with a GPS verified speed though, but it should be enough that the organisers have done that.

Thanks for the link toby going to get me one of these, sorry for appearing to bang on about seeing 206 on the speedo but it was rather exciting and the only place other than perhaps the Autobahn I could do this. Incidentially , on your mighty 208 run what was the speedo reading?

(Craig, just speaking out loud, not critising)

I think there are a couple of things

1) You cannot control what is brought to the event. In the end if people upgrade power without brakes, then you cannot control that. If people don't check tyre pressures you cannot control that....

2) If the beams are pulled back, then yes I agree it is the way to reset the magic 200 and also control 1) above better.

3) And probably most important, you have no way to warm up brakes before the run. If you could run around in a circuit twice then at least the first run would be a marker and then your actual run would be the next. Difficult to organise but at least would help with brakes.

I don't think any of us want a repeat of the 9ff incident but my fear is eventually it will happen unless pull back. It is a great day out that long may that continue.

It's a great day with petrol heads going head to head in all sorts of cars ....

Seeing what your own car will do against other cars in a real world situation ...

Can we get a few 100 ft added to the runway wink

Its all become clear to me now, early in the day we saw speeds on the lights that just weren't right. We were seeing the previous cars run doh
Obvious when you know.
Just about come down now, I loved it. Thanks again to all involved.

Hi Craig,

I had a great day and am just waiting for your figures for my best run to go up on the VMAX website - i'm not sure that the 167 I saw was correct.
Can you confirm.

Must sort my shabby brakes :-)

I don't think V boxes are the answer - tempting people to run too far.

Shame we couldnt run a bit later - the wind was getting up even more after 4.

Cheers

I only recorded one run on my AX22 which is when i saw 186 on the beams, and my data says 185.3, so pretty close to be fair.... My 188 run was not recorded, it was my passenger MOD500 that called it out and i'm sticking with it smile

As Toby says, it's a good fun day which is kept light hearted. Anyone who is really serious about knowing their 'true' VMax result should invest in a VBox or AX22. The beams should stay so we know 'where' to brake biggrin And for those that want a pretty good estimate

searider yep 167, JBL930 188.

Ref beams, we do site them slightly differently each time based on weather conditions etc. Its a balance between allowing the guys with less power to have a good run to their vmax but equally as ken says making sure that they allow safe braking for the big boys. You cant really please everyone in regard to that but I do take all your comments on board so thanks for noting things gentlemen.

My two penneth; It was my first time at Vmax, yes it wasn't perfect, but I thought it was an excellent day, well run, nice friendly helpful people, great fun and good value

The timing boards were unquestionably difficult to spot, particularly on a solo run and the time delay didn't seem consistant from one run to the next. If the previosu car had a speed patently different to your own, it was easy to be sure whether you were looking at the speed that related to your car or the previous one but where the speeds were similar, that obviously became more difficult

However that is my sole criticism and of course just because they were hard to spot, doesn't mean they weren't accurate

Whoever is sniping should either accept this one isn't for them or come down and view before they judge

I get the impression banter on here pre & post event is part of the fun, including comparing speeds on the speedos, gps, vbox, traps, etc. No one appears to be overly showing off - any competitiveness on the day, certainly from what I coudd see, appeared pretty good natured

One other point - as others have mentioned, people were very approachable and I probably gave at least as many passenger laps as I received. That too was a really nice aspect of the day.

thanks Jon, as mentioned, timing board issue will be addressed for next vmax. Hope everything else was as you'd expect it to be.
