Compare MGF to a TR7

I have liked TR7s since I was a kid. About 20 years ago I knew a bloke with one and he loved it.

I have an MGF, infact I have had 5 including a TF160. I've got no space for another car but if one day I decided to get one, how would it compare to an MGF. The cars are 20 years apart in design, the engines are in a different place but I guess If I had been born 10 or 15 years earlier I'd have had TR7s I guess.

I restored a TR7 and it is a reasonable car to drive but nothing special. Certainly it doesn't feel like a sportscar.

The engine is slow by today's standards as standard and the handling safe but very soft.

Most people when they restore them put harder bushes in and uprated springs and dampers and it does make them much much better.

A good TR8 conversion is a very nice car, as are a number that have had sprint engines fitted.

Stick with the MGF.

Bare in mind they were made for the us market. In their day there performance was competitive with around 105BHP. They were quite well equipped in their day, also built to quite advanced crash standards, things like side impact bars & beefier chassis rails. Don't forget it was a design for the early days of the US increased safety requirements & it was designed for the US. I had a TR7 V8 & with polybushed & SPAX suspension it was a very accomplished car, also with refurbed seats very comfortable, far better than previous TRs. A warmed over 8Valve engine makes for a more sprightly car & a sprint engine makes them go better still. Like all cars of the period they rot like hell. Mine was rebuilt after an accident into a California shell which was rot free.
Would I have an MGF definitely not, would I have another TR7 possibly.
