Looks like the Gen2 Goodyear 4seasons is right up there with the CrossClimate from the AutoBild test. Will be very interesting to see some more reviews as it's also a useful £10 to £20 a corner cheaper than the CC in the size I need.

Is there a big difference in performance between a Conti 850 and a Nokian WR D4 ? The Nokian is 20% cheaper in 225 45 17, but is it a false economy ?
I live on the South Coast of England and normally do not need to fit my winter set but always have one just in case.

To me the argument for narrower tyres was only valid back in the day when they weren't any different from Off Road Sh t shovelers, where you were trying to get down to some firmer surface.
I can't remember where I saw this but I'm sure that Conti stated that the advice to go narrower wasn't really relevant anymore - just stick the same size winters on and off you go.

I certainly do this - I have had the same size winter set on my old 2012 SLK and on my 2014 SLK; standard fitment is a 225/40/18 front and a 245/35/18 rear. I can't get a matching brand in that size combination (or couldn't in 2012), and also the 245 rears are twice the price of 255s, so for winters I run 255/35/18 rears (diameter change is minimal) which my insurers are fine with.

I live in east Lancs and the car stays mobile in six inch deep snow and up some big hills.

I've just tested this with the CrossClimate and TS850. It's very close, less than 5% difference in most tests apart from dry braking, where the CrossClimate bests the Goodyear and Conti by over 15%.

Full results up next week

Great, will look forward to that, I've been putting off my decision until there was more data out there.

Are you going to cover subjective information like driver feedback as well as the raw test data?

Interesting reading. The blurb on the AutoBild does make it sound like the CC's are still smack bang in all-season territory, but at a time when all seasons as a market are becoming more technically developed and earning their title more.

Still veering towards the Nokian Weatherproof for my car mind, despite the mid-table Autobild result. But for the missus motor it's between the CC and the V4S2. Probably go with whatever is cheapest as her car has some natural advantages in the snow.

I'm going to be running Pirelli PZeros this winter.

I'll let you know how I get on.

I picked up my new winter rims yesterday, this year I am getting winter tyres for the first time as I'll be driving to the Alps in January. There seems to be a whole new crop of premium winter tyres out this year and I've not decided what to get yet. I'm currently looking at the following but can't find any reviews/tests of these tyres to compare:
  • Nokian WR D4
  • Michelin Alpin 5
  • Goodyear Ultragrip Performance Gen-1
The pricing predictably goes Nokian -> Goodyear -> Michelin. They'll be going on a big, heavy, powerful AWD car so wear rate is fairly important and is where Michelin traditionally excel but would they be worth the extra?

I've dropped the RS6 off at the garage this morning to have the Pirelli SottoZero 270 Series 2 winters fitted this morning.

Ithete has been a couple of mornings consecutively with the temperature at about 3 or 4 degrees, which I always use as the judge when to stick them on.

Cheers

First frost up here in the Dales today too.

Will sling the Falken HS439s back on the BMW. This will be their 3rd and final year before replacement. Have been absolutely epic even in the fat size (235/45/17 front and 255/40/17 rear).

Also about to sort my wife's Panda 100hp with a set of winters. The Toyo T1-Rs it's on now are down to about 2mm and will be like skates up here in t'Dales once we get a proper freeze wink

Seems I can get four Toyo Snowprox S953 fitted for £200. Love the little Fiat, so cheap for everything!

This early?

I waited until early December last year as there was just no need before that.

As my car is very nearly due a new set of tyres and I don't have space or ever had any need for winters previously I am going to try the new Cross Climates to prevent the hill I now live on getting the better of me.

Local shop has them at £65 fitted each for 4 at 205 55 16. That looks like a good price to me.

Curious as to how the tyres will perform as they look almost too good to be true...

Just had the Michelin CrossClimates fitted to the daily hack last week.

Impressions so far are very good in warm / wet / dry. Probably lost 1 or 2 mpg, but hopefully they'll work well in the snow.

Will be fitting the winters to the wife's A2 this weekend, and then there's always the Range Rover on General Grabber AT2's if the snow gets really deep.

What car have you got them on?

I was put off by them only being available in XL and was concerned that might mess up the car's ride.
