Just to be pedantic, on the 'Cars' graphic where you have the Golves with 18" and 14" wheels, you are showing the sizes including the tyre, which is of course very inaccurate

What value exactly was there in that story? Do you think anyone in this thread hasn't successfully completed wintry journeys on summer tyres in the past?

It doesn't seem unreasonable that a thread about winter tyres is actually about winter tyres, and not for people who dismiss the whole concept to go "hey I don't have them and I'm fine" as though it's some kind of little victory, does it?

We've all managed without winter tyres for kin years, but they DO make a significant difference when the weather is poor and the temperatures are cold.

In a similar (but very silly) example of showing what you can do on summers, here I went out for some fun on summer P-Zeros (IIRC they were P-Zeros, but they were certainly summers)

I could 'go' and I could 'corner' (in a Scandinavian way) but even with a mixture of cadence braking and ABS, my stopping distances were huge.

No, there was no need for me to carry out an emergency stop.

I was taught to drive to the conditions, so while no means any form of guarantee, I find this has stood me in good stead for the last 20 years.

It had grip far in excess of that required for my driving in those conditions.

No, I agree completely, I am almost certain that every poster in this thread has completed countless "wintry" journeys on summer or all season tyres over countless years.

We've all got our own opinion, and I'm as entitled as anyone here to post in this thread.

He is right, its a thread discussing different winter tyres, of course there are loads of journeys where you can drive fine on summer tyres, but there are also loads of times where they are a real benefit.

I am happy to take my car on summers up and down the M11 from Norfolk to London in winter during low temps (unless it is snowing hard and settling) but I much prefer the same journey on winter tyres.

And when back in Norfolk, I would rather not think about it too much, rather than adapt to the conditions. There is a huge difference between my Merc on Continental summers and Dunlop Winter Sports as it gets cold, wet and greasy. Just on roundabouts alone it is the difference between really taking it easy with the throttle vs driving normally.

Winter tyres needed in the UK? No.
Is driving on winter tyres better in the UK? For many parts of the country...yeah.
Is it worth the hassle/expense? Only you can decide that.

Got a call from Event Tyres today saying they can't get Michelins until mid January! I can't have Continentals advertised on their website as they don't trust their German supplier to deliver them or I can have Dunlops for an additional £90!

Plan B me thinks!

Irrespective of whether you think they are of any use or not - I would love tyre manufacturers to make tyres that rode as well as winters.

I like my AMG alloys, they look lovely, but I would willingly sacrifice a bit of handling for summers that were just so quiet and comfy. I don't drive so fast anymore. Driving my SLK today after having the tyres changed on Saturday is just so pleasant - much better around town with drain covers, bumps and so on. It's just "syrupy".
