Winter tyres vol 2

Just sold the winter wheels and tyres for my wife's Freelander as I figure it should get us just about anywhere on CrossClimates - the summer tyres will need replacing in November so decided to go for those and regain a bit of space in the shed. Hope I'm right!
Winters will be on my XK8 by December though.

Despite living in Northern Scotland I'll be switching to the cross climate tyres at some point, it's a fwd car so hardly likely to be a big issue in anything except really severe weather.
I've still got winter wheels and tyres with only 1 season on them so no cost this year, excluding the trolley jack I had to buy when mine pissed itself.
I need the cross climates to be released in my size but I haven't checked recently to see if they are.

This might be the wrong forum to ask in (so feel free to move it mods) but I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for winter tyres? Just bought a little Abarth 500 and am getting a second set of 17" alloys for it that I thought I'd stick some winter tyres on. Never done this before, and I don't want to spend a fortune, but I'm keen to hear from people who have and what brand they'd suggest for a little car.
Thanks in advance.

Continental Winter Contact TS850 P, Michelin Alpin 5, Nokian WR A3.Thanks in advance.
Though if you're getting new wheels, I'd go 16" and TS860 (assuming you can clear the brakes)

This is the definitive Scandinavian winter tyre test for 2016 models: https://www.naf.no/forbrukertester/dekktester/vint...
Yes, they work in the UK. No, they won't melt above 7degC. No, they won't fall apart. No, they won't cook. etc, etc, etfkingcetera...

Got rid of the SLK so I sold the 18" Conti TS850Ps on Ebay.
I've got an E class coupe now but it comes with servicing and tyres (19") so I'm not bothering getting winters for that. The OH works from home and has a V70AWD so I have that for my trans-Pennine commuting duties.
I had a happy Ebay encounter though - her old wheels were looking VERY scrappy and 3 had buckles and also needed new tyres. Got a set of lovely, basically unused since being restored and powder coated Volvo alloys with brand spanking new Yoko "W-Drive" winter tyres on - with the AWD we'll not be getting stuck, as well as having smart wheels and no wheel wobble
I noticed over the warm September that they aren't half squidgy though.

The top tyre there has a 190km/h speed rating. My car did 232km/h a fortnight ago.Yes, they work in the UK. No, they won't melt above 7degC. No, they won't fall apart. No, they won't cook. etc, etc, etfkingcetera...
Falling apart and cooking depends on the sort of driving you do.

I've used X-Ice in the UK, also used them at 208 km/h, didn't melt bla bla, would I recommend them for UK exclusive use, frankly no I wouldn't, typically it's too warm and too wet at which point they are out of their comfort zone grip wise.
So why did I use them? Frequent travel up into the wild and woolly north of Scandinavia meant these were the best compromise solution. In Scandinavia would have preferred studded, strongly so, but practicality and in some cases legality prevented. European studless, as opposed to Nordic studless friction tyres would have been better for the UK and mainland Europe parts, but in Nordic conditions, you can really tell the performance difference.

Yes, they'll work. Yes, they'll be crap in the dry. Yes, they'll be pretty awful in the warm and wet.Yes, they work in the UK. No, they won't melt above 7degC. No, they won't fall apart. No, they won't cook. etc, etc, etfkingcetera...
No, you shouldn't use them in the majority of the UK, there are better options for our climate.
