Sorry mild winter was my fault, got winter tyres (Nokian WRA3) on both cars & new central heating last year.

The Nokians seemed to take about 1000miles to wear in on the Impreza, were very squirmy until then, had to pump them up quite hard otherwise they were all over the place. Now they're worn in they seem fine at normal pressures, will keep them for a while yet as they're great in heavy rain too.

Yep mine too. Had an 'interesting' time removing the o/s/r wheel which was stuck fast to the hub - under up using a ratchet strap and the Land Rover to shock it free!

Need to file out the centres a bit for next year as the powder coating has made them fit a bit too snugly!

I'll probably do mine this weekend. The big dilemma is do I do it before or after seeing my osteopath.

Mine are staying on at least another month. Don't forget you can use winter tyres all year they will just wear out at a silly rate in hotter weather (and performance is a bit poo). I knew people in Switzerland that did this, but then they were strange.

Just thought I'd drop a mini review in of my Nokian WR D3's

Paid £390 delivered from tyreleader for 225/45/17 - cheapest I could find.

So far they've been excellent, tried getting the car to lose grip in the breif snow around a small roundabout turn around point near the school next to my house, got to about 25mph before losing traction so very impressive!
In the rain they've made me feel very confident given the conditions, no problems there whatsoever.

Next I plan to run throughout the year but I do maybe 5k a year so shouldn't be an issue, I'll see how they cope in summer but have heard they're fine smile

I'll wait til March, not because of judgements about the weather mainly because I can't be arsed right now hehe

They made little difference this year but it's a gamble. Just because my airbag didn't get used this year doesn't mean it makes sense to get rid of it.

The winter before, my winter tyres were worth every penny I paid.

What's annoying is puncturing one- self inflicted, pulling out of a layby through a small puddle that was a very big puddle/pothole with sharp bits. Changing one was quite a palaver when stocks are low- took me 3 days to find a matching one. Just as well the (mismatched) spare was only required for inner-city pottering.

I drove an E39 BMW 525 from Portsmouth to north Yorks in the bad winter of 2010 snow on Normal Tyres.
Scariest drive ever, but its no big deal. Thousands of people can actually drive on normal tyres in bad weather
I am more worried about getting snowed in at work and not being able to get home.

Just heard the forecast, snow for North Oxfordshire on Friday. Believe it when I see it, but the winters are staying on a while longer here hehe

Just seen the forecast myself! I would have left them on if it wasn't for a puncture in one that wasn't worth repairing!

I drove a Porsche 968 every day on summer tyres that winter. Main roads were generally drivable once you were moving, but traction was very low if you had to stop. On a couple of mornings I couldn't get the bloody thing out of the garage it was so slippery.

Just because something is possible, doesn't mean that its a good idea, so I've put winters on my daily this year (and of course its been the warmest bloody winter on record. Probably grumpy)

Some interesting posts lately.

I have had 4 occasions in the last few months where I have driven over very bad BLACK ICE.
30 meters long in one place!

It is not nice, but I was using the car with winters on so did not slide much.

This morning I took the summer clad car and hit some more BLACK ICE, not bad compared to the other times, but all 4 wheels were sliding gently for about 6 meters or so.

So if there is clear sky in the morning, it's back to the winter clad car for me!
Mind you I leave home at 05:00 and generally very few cars about at that time.

Hi Jim

Most of my encounters were between Dorking and Guildford on the A25, up in the North Downs Surrey Hills. one day it went from -2 to +2 in about 5 miles.
The section near Wotten Hatch Pub being well known for freezing and the bit in Gomshall had Police blue lights flashing and a damaged motorbike up on the footpath.

But one bad section was near work, just outside Alton Hants, again up high near Lasham Airfield.

With all this water still flowing across the roads, and cars spreading it about, it freezes easily.

So people if you know the wet spots en-route and it is frosty, take a bit of extra care is all I'm suggesting.

I am off to norway this morning for a week and the car shall be sitting at the airport however if the weather is the same when i get home the winters will be coming off. They have been a bit of a waste this winter as we have only had 1 slight covering of snow up here in Co Durham 1000ft above sea level where we usually have a lot.

Still i managed to get stuck on the in laws drive in may last year due to a late heavy dump of snow so it might be too soon! still i suppose its only a half our job to change the wheels over again if it snows.

My winters came off Sunday due to the fronts down to the wear bars. Injured myself in the process so can't drive or even walk now.

Glad I still had the winters on early this morning.

Looks like the council got caught out with the frost/ice as the A road to work was the worst I've ever seen it short of being covered in snow.

The arse getting twitchy when mildly prodding the throttle in 6th is a bit disconcerting.
