Winter tyres vol 2
Discussion
Although I have some brand new Nokian wr d3's ready for this winter SWMBO uses Nankang sv's all year round which are now just over 3 years old and can't fault them.
I drove her car over the kirkstone pass last February and drove past all sorts of cars stuck on a hill in the snow without any problem at all. It was such a good feeling I turned around for a second pass but SWMBO said no to a third piss taking pass.

I was just about to order 4 x Hankook W310s from Camskill , when I found Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme a few quid cheaper on Tyre Leader. The Vreds are dot 2011. I've read mixed reviews about Tyre Leader but I can't even decide which is the better tyre.
I ran Vred's on my X5 for 3 seasons, and they were superb. I have a nearly new set on 17" BM alloys that I took off prior to getting the Disco that will be going up for sale in a few weeks...I've taken the plunge and ordered 4 x Hankook W310s from Camskill. 225/60/18s FOR £450. 'Er indoors raised an eyebrow or two, but I reasoned that my tyres will be due for replacement in six months or so and winters will likely be 50% dearer in January. If they've got any significant life left in them, they can go back on in April next year.
Always been a 'premium' tyre type person, so I'll be interested in how these perform. I did note on a recent BMW review that it came with Hankooks fitted from new, so they can't be that 'budget'.

This is how my winter tyre man maths works - and gets round the OH (although it's a bit rich coming from her with an AWD Volvo on year round Quadraxers).I'm on my second leased/pcp (Agility - no idea what it is) from Merc and I'm on a 15k/pa contract.
If I was to keep the summers on for the full duration of the contract I'd have gone through the rears at around 25k and perhaps needed new fronts by 30K.
I got my WinterContacts for the first SLK which meant I handed the car back with the original tyres on it (the rears to me looked low but attracted no comments from MB) and this means that I have another two winters left to use my winter tyres on - effectively they're free (or at the very least it means that I've only had to buy one set of tyres, not two for 60K/4 years (or over as I'll do excess miles) but I've also had the benefit of the winters too (I cross the pennines to work every day)).

You might also find a cheaper option due to a more popular tyresize in one combo.
Definitely. I got a set of wheels with 205/55/16 tyres for considerably less money than I could have got 225/40/18 tyres for. As someone above said check your manual as they'll usually specify a size for winter tyres.

Chaps I can get Quatrac 3's for £107 a corner delivered or Kleber Quadraxxers for £96.
For my month is there anything else better out there/something else I should be considering?
Yes I want all seasons btw.
I put quadraxers on recently and they feel firmer than a full winter, but the reassurance of the snow flake symbol. I also gained 3mpg!!For my month is there anything else better out there/something else I should be considering?

Considering the lack of cold weather last winter apart from where they say "It's a cold bricht nick the noo tonicht" I'm surprised PH folk are still flogging the idea that winter tyres make sense in the UK.
You're far better off swapping from summer to a rain orientated car tyre come spring or Autumn for safety, those will be of use for a long period. But rain tyres are not sexy.
For the vast majority winters are a waste of money for people who seem to want to be just in with the rubbergeeks.
You are better off, to quote the authorities, not going out, instead sitting at home with a nice brandy.

Not sure about rain tyres? Maybe all season tyres are a better bet?
