Even thought there’s no snow in London, it’s -4 degrees today.

My experience is high-performance summer tyres are absolutely useless when it gets that cold, I’m very glad I’m on winters.
-5°C in my part of London!

The Range has the Pirelli Scorpion Zero all season and with two and a half tonnes and four wheel drive, it’s a tank.
Well I know you’re not far from me!

I used to live in Southfields, and whenever there was snow the steep hill into the main junction would be absolute carnage. I did once see a slow-motion pile-up as one car rear-ended another trying to stop downhill.

Perhaps I departed a tad earlier than you!

Alexandra Road is very steep, so I can imagine. Interestingly, it’s always 1°C lower atop Wimbledon Hill than at the base.

Have always run budgets and/or mid-range (Avon/Nankang/Tomket/Viking) to name a few, all been superb in winter conditions.

Currently running Nankang, again, been great - cost me £190 from mytyres last year, fitted in October - local guy fitted them on the very purposeful steel wheels.

Last 4 years I've been running Nankang Winters - they really are very good

On steels

That looks great, BC
Thanks BM - I like it - steels in silver always look better than in the black "hubcaps are missing"

Plus the ride on 17's is soooooo much nicer than 18's, the square set up on 17's is much more balanced/playful than the staggered set of 18's

But for the fact that the summers are still only 10% worn I'd happily stick with the steels and an all seasons tyre all year round

Doing it properly, fitted in October, not panic buying now that there's been a bit of snow biggrin Both my Clio 200 and sons R56 Cooper are on Kuhmos, more than happy with them.

Those steelies look great, I had the black ones from MINI on my F56 but they looked a bit lost.

Cheers for the replies to my query on the previous page chaps. Have booked the shed in for a set of Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons G3 for £410 fitted. Let’s see how they compare to the existing Bridgestone Weather Controls

Heard good things about these tyres - shame the smallest size they come in is 19" frown

Just dropped from pothole unfriendly 17" wheels with 205/45/17 tyres to a set of ebay £100 Bobet 15" wheel now wrapped in Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons 195/65/15's:

Ride is much improved!! Handling doesn't seem to of suffered ether.

I'm sure the benefits of low profile tyres on handling for regular road cars is fairly exaggerated (whilst rim width supporting the tyre barely gets a mention).

I think so too, the new wheels are admittedly 35 offset vs 47.5 of the old wheels which probably helps!

Also, modern cars are so chunky I think they look better with a decent amount of tyre on them. Otherwise you get Bangle 5 series syndrome where the wheels look like casters.

195/65 x 15's, one of the most bargainous tyre sizes you can have, at one time the standard fitting to lots of fast for their day cars, ie 2.9 Gran/Scorpio, Rover 827, Merc E320 etc, quite how standard cars have ended up on the ridiculous sizes of current new normal is a mystery, boneshakers useless in 0.000001mm snow prone to wheel damage and cost a fortune to boot.
Enjoy your new 15" jobbies, they look spot on there.

Where did you get the center caps from?

Currently running winter steel wheels on my wife's F56 MINI but always struggled to find suitable center caps.

Thanks.

I have just double checked the stud patterns and it looks like the 2-Series is 5x120, whereas the F56 MINI is 5x112.

The search continues.

Yes my 1 series is 5 x 120 but so was the Mini Countryman wink

Loads of Minis were 5 x 112 surely the poverty end of the range ran steels and centres?

No worries with kerbing though. Trims are cheaper than a refurb!
