Yep same with Aviva, I have to just let them know I have put Winter Tyres on and that is it, no change in premium or anything.

Germany and Austria you can be fined for not having wintertyres.
Same as Switzerland and also if you have an accident the insurance will not cover your costs. However you can drive winter tyres all year round and it will not have an effect on insurance or you getting fined.

In Germany at least I think that regulations are such that they should be fitted but you would only commit an offence and be liable to a fine if you become immobile/require rescue and/or delay others because of their non-fitment.

A fine distinction, but this is Pistonheads, after all smile

Yep you are right, they would not stop and fine you for because you still have summer tyres on, I knew people that didn't change tyres even in Switzerland because they didn't use the car that often. But if say you had an accident or failed a breath test and found out to have summer tyres on in winter you would get prosecute for this offence.

Ordered 4 Nokian WR A3's for the Scooby. About £450 including fitting. Currently got a mixture of new, mixed budget tyres all round: Runway, Fullrun etc. So will just run the Nokians until they are worn or the temps rise enough to cause them issues.

Went for the A3's over the D3's as I find a non-asymetric pattern works better in the wet/standing water - which I expect to encounter far more over the next few months than snow. Will probably also get a set for the missus Focus, as they also have newish but unmatched budget tyres and one random Conti Sport Contact 2 on the back.

Other than My Tyres, where else can I look for complete winter wheel and tyre packages with tyres mounted, balanced and delivered. Anyone else with keen prices?

Most UK alloy wheel retailers offer this but the prices are never anything like as good as My Tyres in my experience.
I bought a set of Merc OEM Alloys with Winter Tyres from a trader on fleabay in Germany. About 50 percent cheaper than in the UK and delivered within a few days.

I've previously ordered steels + tyres direct from mytyres which was very handy as they just rock up and you fit them.

This year i ordered alloys + conti ts850's for the missus car but from Tyreleader. The same wheels and tyres were cheaper with no extra delivery charges.

I had them delivered directly to a local garage who fitted / balanced them all for £10/wheel, which still make them cheaper than buying form mytyres.

The result to me is no different - i go to the local garage, pick up the wheels all mounted, they'd probably even fit them for me if i wanted, for less than mytyres.

You won't have any problems with the tyres, the A3's are a great choice, but it's worth noting the directional D3's are better with standing water than the asymmetric A3s. It's one of the biggest advantages of directional tyres.

The A3 was the right choice for your car though.

I've had different experiences using Vredestein tyres but then there are a whole load of other factors to take in consideration. You are right in general though. They didn't have D3s in the correct size anyway hehe

Where does it say that? I told them last year about swapping my wheels over for another OEM set with winter tyres and they more or less said it didn't matter.

Called in at my local Tesco and parked near their home delivery vans.
Noticed they were all on Blizzaks (sp?).
Wine was 25% off four bottles or more by the way!

Cheers, I'll check out German Ebay. I suppose Ebay in any wintery nation might throw up something good. Trouble is, my car is not common ('cos they are pants)so finding an OEM wheel with right size tyre was tricky last time I looked.

Not sure where in the documentation, but they always put a note against my policy on their system when I have changed them over. I just give them a call and let them know.

Had a look on Tyreleader, they are a good chunk cheaper for the same thing, but their list of fitters near to me are all pretty rough looking back street places. They may well be OK but I wouldn't want to find out with a brand new set of rims. I do know a half decent fitter but he charges a lot as he's not over impressed with fitting other people's tyres, and in which case I may as well just order form My Tyres

I used one of their fitters for some summers on the BMW. The place was ok, but wasn't impressed to be charged £25/wheel when i came to pay rather than £15/wheel as quoted "because they're runflats mate, cost more to fit".

Given the type of cars we're mostly driving on PH, this test in 235/35 R19 might be of some interest to this thread.

how does it work with the tyre pressure monitors? Ordered a wheel and winter tyre set for a mk7 golf assume I can disable the TPM warning system in the golf?

It was written in English? You've got the wrong end of the stick, somebody was saying he was surprised insurers don't use the fact some people DO NOT fit winter tyres in winter to get out of claims. The subsequent replies were about that, not about however it was you read it.

If its like our cars, Merc and BMW, the TPMS works using the ABS sensors, there are no sensors in the wheels so you can fit anything. You might have to do a reset if the rolling radius is a bit different to your summers, but other than that, no problem.

That argument is lost on me as Churchill [our current insurer] stipulates that you inform them when winters are fitted/removed...

Cheers
Nowhere in your policy does it mandate the fitting of winter tyres - nowhere in UK law does it mandate the fitting of winter tyres - therefore an insurer is not going to refuse to payout on a claim because you've not got winter tyres. It's pretty much that simple. In some other countries (Countries who actually get a winter and dont need to sit on PH pretending winter tyres revolutionised a 4c commute in the dry) the reason why not having winter tyres might lead to insurance issues is because the law dictates they must be fitted.
Sorry, did not understand a word of your reply?

PS It's quite simple... IF you fit winters, Churchill require you tell them. Axa, for example, don't. I'm just complying with the policy terms so whether they pay out or not yada yada yada is neither here nor there...

PPS we do get a winter up in rural Scotland. Although last year was mild[ish] that was far from the norm.

PPS This is my first car with winters as for the last 20 odd years I've been driving 4x4s with all seasons. The wife's car has been getting winters for the last four years since living rural. Why - for the small cost I can't be arsed getting stuck. When I was younger with more time on my hands it was fun getting stuck but what with a busy family life...
Taken from the Association of British Insurers website. Apparently Churchill do not require you to notify them when you fit winter tyres.
